After finishing second in the Class AA girls and boys team races a year ago the Brandon Valley track teams will be looking to take one step up on the podium in May.

Class AA girls

Fresh off a Class AA state cross-country title, and with a host of mid-distance and field event specialists, the Brandon Valley girls look to be the favorites to win the Class AA girls track & field team title.

Senior Mia Wentzy won the 800-meter run (2:12) and finished second in the 400-meter dash (:58.69) at the 2023 state track meet. Wentzy anchored the 3,200-meter relay and 1,600- meter relays to state titles for the Lynx.

Another promising returner for the Lynx is sophomore Addison Scholten who finished third in the 800-meter run (2:13) and anchored the 1,600 meter sprint medley to a second place finish. Scholten, Wentzy, Sarah VanDeBerg and Lily Rude are all returning after setting a state meet record in the 3,200 meter relay (9:07.03).

Brandon Valley has several highly ranked field event specialists returning. Jayaunna Stroh won the high jump (5-04) and Madison Pederson was second in the triple jump (38-05).

While Brandon Valley might be the favorite the Sioux Falls Lincoln girls are the defending champions and loaded with sprint threats the Lynx can’t replicate.

Lincoln’s Ellen Merkley (:12.42) and Ella Termaat (:12.51) finished first and second in the 100-meter dash. Both ran legs on Lincoln’s winning 800-meter relay team and ran legs on a 400-meter relay team that will likely be favored to win a state title in May.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman finished third in the team race a year ago. The Knights will be counting on big points from junior Libby Castelli who won the 1,600-meter run, finished second in the 800-meter run and third in the 3,200 meter run. Castelli anchored the Knights 1,600-meter sprint medley team to a state championship and won the Class AA cross country title last fall. The Knights always score big in the field events, particularly the pole vault.

Sioux Falls Washington senior Nyariek Kur won the long jump (18-04), the triple jump (38-11) and was second in the 100-meter hurdles (:14.88).

  • Pierre senior Reese Terwilliger won the shot put (44-01) at the state meet. She could get a big push from Aberdeen Central sophomore Taryn Hermansen (42-2.75) who was second as a freshman.

  • Spearfish pole vaulters Gretchen Adamski and Reese Nida both cleared 11-09 at the state meet to finish first and second at the state meet. Nida is only a freshman this season.

  • Yankton’s Shae Rumsey is the returning state champion in the 400-meter dash (:57.65) and Pierre’s Kali Ringstmeyer is the defending champion in the 200-meter dash (:26.29).

Class AA boys

Every year it seems the Class AA boys team race comes down to the final few events with multiple teams in contention.

Don’t expect anything different in 2024 as teams from Brandon Valley, Sioux Falls O’Gorman, Sioux Falls Lincoln and Rapid City Stevens should all be in the mix at the state meet.

Brandon Valley looks to have a slight edge going into the season with Landon Dulaney and Wyatt Melcher manning the jumping events. Dulaney won the long jump 22-7.5 and Melcher was third in the triple jump (44-5.5).

Dulaney, only a junior, was a state champion in the 200-meter dash and anchored the 800-meter relay team to a state meet record last May (1:27.52).

Sioux Falls O’Gorman executed to perfection to win the Class AA boys team title in 2023. The Knights return Aiden Hofer and Henry Theobald who finished first and second in the triple jump.

The Knights return Peyton Mausbach, Maverick Jones, Kellen Askew and Jack Castelli. These are multi-purpose athletes that make O’Gorman dangerous in the sprint relays all the way up through the 3,200-meter relay.
