While most of the teams at the upcoming Lakota Nation Invitational will have played a game or two prior to Dec. 15, Tobey Cass’ Custer Wildcats open their season vs. Lower Brule at the event.

With no film for other teams to scout, and a host of returning players, Custer vs. Rapid City Christian (No. 3 seed) on Dec. 16 brings an element of intrigue to the first day of bracket play.

“We have a good group of players and some new additions,” Cass said.

Among those players returning are seniors, 6-foot-3 post Kellyn Kortemeyer and Josey Wahlstrom.

Kortemeyer has been a mainstay in the Custer lineup for four years and Wahlstrom is back after missing her entire junior year because of injury.

“Josey Wahlstrom is coming off a season ending ACL knee injury,” Cass said. “She has worked hard to get back to playing at a top level.”

A big junior class played a lot as sophomores. Among those returners are Allyson Cass, guard, Alice Sedlacek, guard/post, Ramsey Karim, guard and Alley Kelley, guard.

Cass lists Bailey Cass (5-foot-11, sophomore forward) and Jo Jo Larsen (5-foot-4, freshman guard) as his promising prospects

“When these girls play together as a team, and not worry about individual accolades, they will be hard to beat,” he said. “Our goal is to be one of the eight teams in the state tournament at the end of the season.”

Team notes:

  • Kellyn Kortemeyer is the state record holder in the shot put.

  • Academics first - “Combined our varsity team has a GPA of 3.87,” Cass said. “These girls can play basketball but more importantly get it done in the classroom.”
