SIOUX FALLS — Thursday’s opening round of the Class A state tournament didn’t turn out the way Hill CIty players and fans had hoped. Even a loss to Hamlin doesn’t take away from a remarkable year in sports for the Rangers.

Hill City qualified for the state tournament for the first time in school history and junior Zane Messick is thrilled to be part of the experience.

“It was huge to be able to have this opportunity,” Messick said. “That right there has been awesome for us to see everyone in our community so excited about basketball this year.”

Messick scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds in Thursday’s 82-43 loss to Hamlin.

Messick was a top wide receiver on a Hill City football team that reached the Class 9AA quarterfinals before bowing out to Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy 36-26. The Ranger football team went 8-2 this season and revved up excitement in the community with their success.

“It’s been an exciting year to be on this ride and be part of it,” he said.

In football, Messick was senior quarterback Devin Buehler’s favorite target. On Thursday, Buehler led Hill City with 17 points as the dynamic duo scored 33 of their team’s 43 points.

“It’s been a blessing to play with Devin,” Messick said. “He’s a great athlete and a great leader and he’ll be missed next year.”

Adding another layer to an already fulfilling year is Messick’s father, Ryan Messick, is an assistant coach for the Hill City boys basketball team.

“It’s been amazing to do this with my dad,” Messick said. “I grew up in the St. Thomas More program with him as coach so it’s just a blessing and an honor to do this with him.”
