MISSION — McLaughlin’s Renzo Bullhead had a solid day at the 2023 Lakota Nation Invitational track and field meet. 

In one of the top races of the day Bullhead won the 200-meter dash (:23.6), nipping Todd County speedster Ty Valandra who ran :23.94. He also anchored the McLaughlin 400-meter relay to first place (:46.88). The quartet of Quincy Mclaughlin, Tyler Bull Head, John Eagle and Renzo Bullhead ran a season's best time that is just off qualifying the Mustangs for the state track meet in that event. Bullhead also finished fourth in the shot put (35-11)

Todd County won both the girls and team titles at the 2023 Lakota Nation Invitational track meet in Mission Thursday.

The Todd County girls scored 131 points, just ahead of Lakota Tech (129) and Pine Ridge (74).The Todd County boys amassed 110 points ahead of Little Wound (86) and Pine Ridge (83).  

In other boys action Todd County sophomore Ty Valandra won the 100-meter dash (:11.41) and anchored the Falcons 800-meter relay to victory (1:39.94). Todd County’s Bryce Redfish won the shot put (40-2) and the discus (112-1). Todd County freshman Chris Ellert won the 400-meter dash (:55.99) and ran legs on the Falcons winning 800-meter relay and 1,600 meter relay (4:09.42). 

Pine Ridge senior David Tuttle won the 1,600-meter run (5:00.75) and anchored the Thorpes sprint medley relay to a title (4:06.47). Pine Ridge’s Julian Weston won the 110-meter hurdles (:19.26), ran a leg on the winning sprint medley relay, won the triple-jump (35-5) and finished fifth in the long jump (17-4.25). 

In girls action Red Cloud’s Ashlan Carlow won the 100-meter hurdles (:17.68), the high jump (4-8) and teamed with April Knight, Julia Hughes and Kennedy Fridia on the Crusaders’ winning 400-meter relay (:54.51). Kennedy Fridia also won the shot put (32-8.50). 

Lakota Tech’s Taylor Byerley won the 1,600 meter run (5:45.68) and anchored the Tatanka’s sprint medley relay team to a win (4:47.94). 

Todd County freshman Elizabeth Moore won the 800-meter run (2:59.06) and the 3,200-meter run (14:46.14) and finished second in the 1,600 meter run (6:30.20). 

Lower Brule’s Lael Middletent won the 400-meter dash (1:06.72) and finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (:13.62) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (:28.84). 

Two of the top performances of the day came in the girls sprints. Todd County sophomore Julise Shaw blazed to a win in the 100-meter dash (:12.60). Red Cloud’s April Knight ran a season's best (:26.35) to win the 200-meter dash.
