WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Rapid City Christian’s second trip to Wessington Springs in a week was an historic one.

The Comets knocked off Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central, 36-7, in the Class 11B playoffs on Thursday. Rapid City Christian edged the Blackhawks, 7-0, in the regular-season finale on Oct. 13.

The Comets (7-2) again made the 250-mile trek, and again defeated WWSSC (7-2).

“We had a bunch of confidence coming in,” Rapid City Christian quarterback Simon Kieffer said. “But we knew it’s hard to beat a team two times in a row, especially two times in a week. So we knew we were going to have come ready to play and that’s what we did today.”

It was also Rapid City Christian’s first-ever 11-man playoff win in school history.

“It’s awesome,” Kieffer said about the milestone win. “Especially where we were a few years ago, to where we are now.”

In the regular-season finale, Braylon Marshall’s one-yard touchdown plunge in the fourth quarter was the difference in the game. The first contest was also played under rainy and cold weather conditions.

On Thursday, temperatures were in the mid-60s and that opened up Rapid City Christian’s offensive attack.

“Last weekend it was hard to throw because of the weather,” Kieffer said. “We were kind of limited. But today it felt like we could do what we wanted. We could throw the ball. We could run the ball. The line had good pushes and we made plays all over the field.”

Kieffer engineered Rapid City Christian’s offensive attack and multiple players contributed to the win. Kieffer connected with Lars Kieffer for a touchdown pass, Braylon Marshall had a touchdown run, Benson Kieffer booted a 42-yard field goal, Malachi Maseman scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone and Wes Schlabach scored a rushing touchdown and a pick-six.

The Comets’ defense bottled up WWSSC quarterback Holden Havlik, who was intercepted three times. Schlabach had two picks and Wilson Kieffer had an interception.

Havlik threw a touchdown pass to Ryder Michalek in the fourth quarter, to prevent the shutout. It would have been Rapid City Christian’s six shutout win of the season.

“It’s great,” Simon Kieffer said about the defense. “They’ve done it all year. It really helps when they shut people out, getting turnovers and it just helps us a lot. It builds momentum for us and I know every time we come on the field, they are going to have their best day.”

Rapid City Christian will play either Deuel or Webster Area in the quarterfinals.
