Rapid City Stevens track and field teams come up big at Queen City Classic meet

SPEARFISH —-The Rapid City Stevens track and field teams were the top South Dakota teams at Friday’s Queen City Classic meet.

The Raider girls scored 124.5 points, ahead of Thunder Basin, Wyoming (121.5) and Spearfish (73). Custer (63) and Sturgis (58) rounded out the top-five teams. 

Thunder Basin, Wyoming won the boys team title with 143.5 points, ahead of Rapid City Stevens (138) and Sturgis (100). Rapid City Central (78) and Custer (40) rounded out the top five boys teams. 

The Raider girls picked up wins from Avery Dormann in the 1,600-meter run (5:14.47), Brienna Brewer in the javelin (118-09) and Ava Holzwarth in the long jump (18-11.25). Rapid City Stevens won the 400-meter relay (:48.71) and 800-meter relay (1:44.24).

Bennett County eighth-grader Peyson O’Neill won the high jump (5-06), the 110-meter hurdles (:15.54) and 300-meter hurdles (:44.56). Bennett County freshman Harley Harris won the triple jump (35-07.25). 

Sturgis senior Avery Marler won the 400-meter dash (:56.86) and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay (4:03.85). Spearfish’s Peyton VanDeest won the 3,200-meter run (10:53.70) and anchored the Spartans winning 3,200-meter relay (9:47.91).

Custer’s Jordyn Larsen won the 200-meter dash (:24.86). 

The Stevens boys, led by Jack Day, won the 110-meter hurdles (:14.72), Elias Gillen who won the discus (146-07) and Miles Brekhus, won the 1,600-meter run (4:24.51).

Bennett County sophomore Rush O’Neill won the high jump (6-10) that equaled the No. 10 high jump in South Dakota prep history. 

Sturgis senior Jayden Ludwick won the 300-meter hurdles (:40.77). Custer’s Roland Sedlacek won the javelin (172-04) with teammate Kincade Lehman winning the long jump (22-05.25).

Rapid City Central won the 800-meter relay (1:29.75).
