Sioux Falls, Corsica, Watertown capture men's amateur basketball titles
Watertown Foothills Contracting won the 2023 Class A state amateur basketball tournament on Sunday in Madison.

MADISON — Amateur teams from Sioux Falls, Corsica, and Watertown captured the three divisional titles in championship action at the 76th annual South Dakota Amateur Basketball Association state tournament on Sunday.

In the "C" division championship, Sioux Falls Avalanche defeated the Watertown Waterboys 77-72 behind 22 points from Sam Hulstien, 17 points from Brandon Feterl, and 16 points from tournament MVP Andrew Siemonsma. Watertown was led by Brayden Brandreit's 22 points, and got 17 from Alex Harms, 11 from Collin Fitz, and 10 from Ethan Clark. Joining MVP Siemonsma on the all-tournament team were Feterl and Brock Hanten from Sioux Falls, Brandreit and Fitz from Watertown, Michael Bauer and Zach Remily from Faulkton, Brock Dufek and Kyle Krahn from Lake Preston, Cody Brown from Madison, and Dawson Geuke from Sturgis.

Sioux Falls 77: Sam Hulstein 22, Brad Buck 8, Brandon Feterl 17, Jason Hulstein 7, Brock Hanten 7, Andrew Siemensma 16.

Watertown 72: Ethan Clarke 11, Alex Harms 17, Riley Kockelman 2, Jeff Hauschild 5, Lucas Trooien 5, Brayden Brandreit 22, Collin Fitz 10, Tyler Spence 0, Andrew Wallert 0. 


Corsica Rexwinkel Concrete outlasted Clear Lake Swenson Welding 91-86 in the "B" championship behind a balanced attack led by tournament MVP Chris Punt's 23 points, 15 points apiece from Skyler Bloch and Luke Bamberg, 14 from Jason Spicer, and 10 from Jacob Giles. Clear Lake was led with 25 points apiece from Falcon Albers and Matt Anderson. Sam McCloud added 15 points and Keenan Soyland chipped in 14. Joining MVP Punt on the all tournament team were Bloch and Bamberg from Corsica, Albers and Anderson from Clear Lake, Joey Mitchell and Eric Hall from Huron, Bennett White and Ted Boomsma from Wolsey, Jaxson Frankenstein from Redfield, and Derek Brown from Dell Rapids.

Corsica 91: Kade Rexwinkel 0, Luke Bamberg 15, Chris Punt 23, Travis Dyke 4, Deric Denning 3, Jacob Giles 10, Lee Niewenhuis 0, Tait Sibbel 7, Jason Spicer 14, Skyler Bloch 15.

Clear Lake 86: Derek Trooien 2, Keenan Soyland 14, Falcon Albers 25, Justin Cassels 0, Sam McCloud 15, Lincoln Swenson 5, Matt Anderson 25.


In the "A" championship game, Watertown Foothills Contracting defeated host Madison Sporty's 93-82 behind 23 points from Ryan Boike and 20 from tournament MVP Josh Hanson. Kyle Weisner and Ryan Burggraff added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for Watertown, who entered the tournament as the 2022 defending "B" champions. Madison was led by Jamal Branco, Tyler Tappe, and Brady Wiebe with 15 points apiece, while Griffan Callahan and Jared Vlastuin each added 11. Joining MVP Hanson on the all-tournament team were Weisner, Burggraff, and Dustin Tetzlaff from Watertown, Tappe, Callahan, and Vlastuin from Madison, Al Richter and Addison Park from Sioux Falls Quoin Bank, and Adam Templeton and Steven Schaefer from Rapid City We Are Farmers.
