GILLETTE, Wyo. — In just the first full day of competition at the National High School Finals Rodeo, Wall’s Piper Cordes is making an early statement.

Cordes, the 2023 South Dakota state barrel racing champion, uncorked a 17.015 second run in barrel racing early Monday morning, finishing well ahead of anyone in the morning session.

Sturgis’ Landry Haugen had a fourth-place effort in her Monday morning performance of the girls cutting and scored 142.5 points. Blunt’s Lucas Yellow Hawk also had a solid run Monday morning in bareback competition (60) with a fourth-place finish in his performance. Pierre’s Ryan Sheppick was third in his performance of the reined cow horse competition. 

On Sunday, it was Spearfish’s Brylee Grubb performing well in the goat tying competition. Grubb’s run on Sunday evening of 7.84 seconds helped her to a third-place finish. Faith’s Drew Harper and Belle Fourche’s Sern Weishaar, 7.44 seconds.

Goat Tying: 3. Brylee Grubb, Spearfish, 7.84 seconds.

Pole Bending: 8. Taylor McGregor, Canistota, 20.89: Sydney Stahl. Kimball, 139. 

Reined Cow Horse: 3. Ryen Sheppick, Pierre, 287.5; 20. Chase Brunsch, Pine Ridge, 281.5.
