Week of Jan. 25 Boys Basketball Games to Watch - St. Thomas More hosts Rapid City Christian in Region 8A tilt

No. 4 Rapid City Christian vs. No. 5 St. Thomas More 

St. Thomas More will host Region 8A foe Rapid City Christian on Friday in a highly-anticipated all-Rapid City clash. 

The Comets and Cavaliers are among the top Class A boys basketball teams and the contest will hold big significance in the overall seed points picture. 

No. 4-ranked Rapid City Christian is 12-0 and is currently No. 3 in Class A points standings. No. 5 St. Thomas More is 12-1 and is currently No. 7 in Class A points standings. 

The Comets are one of four undefeated teams left in Class A and they’re coming off an 81-67 win over Custer. Rapid City Christian, which captured this season’s Lakota Nation Invitational championship, is powered by Benson Kieffer, Julius Frog, Elijah Hoyt and Sam Fischer. 

The Cavaliers are coming off their first loss, a 52-49 setback against Winner at the Hanson Classic. St. Thomas More topped Spearfish (55-42) on Tuesday before the contest against Rapid City Christian.

St. Thomas More is paced by Caleb Hollenbeck, Lee Neugebauer, Will Green and Jordan Uhlir. The Cavaliers are riding a four-game winning streak against the Comets. 


No. 3 Sioux Falls Christian at No. 1 Dakota Valley 

Dak-XII foes Sioux Falls Christian and Dakota Valley will clash in a top-five Class A contest on Thursday in North Sioux City. 

The matchup will feature two of the last four remaining undefeated teams left in Class A boys basketball, with both teams sporting 10-0 records. 

Dakota Valley, which is coming off an 82-57 win over No. 2 Sioux Valley at the Hanson Classic, is riding a 36-game-winning streak. The Panthers have a collection of next-level talent, including University of South Dakota signee Isaac Bruns. The all-state guard is complemented by point guard Randy Rosenquist and 6-foot-7 Jaxson Wingert. 

Sioux Falls Christian will be tasked with trying to slow down the high-powered Panthers. The Chargers have picked up quality wins over Lennox, Sioux Falls O’Gorman, Dell Rapids and Madison. 

 

Mount Vernon/Plankinton at RV Winner 

Southeast South Dakota Conference foes Mount Vernon/Plankinton will collide in Winner. 

The Warriors will host the Titans on Friday in a matchup featuring a pair of all-state guards, Reed Rus and Blake Volmer. 

Rus, a University of South Dakota football signee, is a versatile 6-foot-4 point guard. He’s coming off 16 points, 11 assists, nine steals and eight rebounds in a 76-40 win over Wagner on Jan. 24. He’s complemented in the paint by 6-foot-7 Jordan Stoltz and guard Zach Baker. 

The Warriors counter with all-stater Blake Volmer, who is averaging 16.5 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Aiden Barfuss (14.2 ppg/3.5 rpg) and 6-foot-7 Shawn Hammerbeck (12.5 ppg/7.5 rpg) also pace the Warriors, who are coming off a 52-49 win over St. Thomas More at the Hanson Classic.
