605 Sports Week 5 Games to Watch: Wagner hosts Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central in Class 11B tilt

Here is a look at games to watch this week in South Dakota high school football:

 

Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central (2-1) at Wagner (4-0)

Rankings: Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central is receiving votes in Class 11B; Wagner is receiving votes in Class 11B.

Outlook: Wagner will put its undefeated start to the test against Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central today.

The Red Raiders have picked up wins over Lakota Tech, Bennett County, Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian and Miller/Highmore-Harrold. But their schedule is about to ramp up, with contests against Winner, Mount Vernon/Plankinton and Jim River on the horizon.

Wagner is paced by quarterback Dustin Honomichl, who has accounted for 705 passing yards and eight touchdown passes. 

WWSSC dropped a 30-14 decision against Sioux Valley in the opener, but has since defeated Miller/Highmore-Harrold and Jim River. The Blackhawks’ quarterback Blake Larson paces the offense with 230 passing yards and five touchdown passes. 


Lyman (3-0) at Wall (4-0)

Rankings: Lyman is receiving votes in Class 9AA; Wall is No. 5 in Class 9A.

Outlook: Two undefeated West River football teams will collide at Wall’s turf field along Interstate-90. The Eagles eliminated the Raiders in last year’s Class 9A quarterfinals on the same field. 

Today’s matchup features a host of skill players on both sides. The Eagles’ offense is orchestrated by sophomore quarterback Burk Blasius, who has thrown for 439 yards and has rushed for another 259 yards and five touchdowns. 

Juniors Cedar Amiotte (538 rushing yards/7 touchdowns) and Mason Heath (210 rushing yards/7 touchdowns) also had pop to the rushing attack. 

Senior running back Colton Collins paced Lyman’s offense with 544 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Junior quarterback Teagan Gourneau has accounted for seven total touchdowns, including four rushing scores this season.


Sioux Valley (2-1) at McCook Central/Montrose (3-0)

Rankings: Sioux Valley is No. 3 in Class 11B; McCook Central/Montrose is No. 5 in Class 11B. 

Outlook: A pair of dynamic quarterbacks headline this top-five Class 11B matchup.

Sioux Valley’s Parker Puetz, who recently committed to play baseball at North Dakota State, has thrown for 521 yards and four touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder has also rushed for 315 yards. 

Gavin Gordon, a 6-foot-4, 195-pounder, has passed for 488 yards and three touchdowns during MCM’s undefeated start. 


Faulkton Area (3-1) at Hitchcock-Tulare (3-1)

Rankings: Faulkton Area is No. 2 in Class 9B; Hitchcock-Tulare is receiving votes in Class 9B. 

Outlook: Two high-scoring Class 9B offenses, led by dynamic quarterbacks, will clash today.

Hitchcock-Tulare, which is powered by dual-threat quarterback Jack Boomsma, hosts Faulkton Area and quarterback Parker Geditz. 

Boomsma, a 5-foot-10, 160-pounder, has accounted for 381 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air. The senior has added 320 rushing yards and six more scores. Sophomore running back Erik Salmen has racked up 311 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

Geditz, a 6-foot-1, 160-pound senior, has thrown for 357 yards and five touchdowns. 


Sioux Falls Washington (2-1) at Harrisburg (3-0)

Rankings: Sioux Falls Washington is No. 5 in Class 11AAA; Harrisburg is No. 1 in Class 11AAA. 

Outlook: After dropping a 17-14 decision to Sioux Falls Jefferson in the opener, Sioux Falls Washington picked up wins over Rapid City Central (62-14) and Sioux Falls O’Gorman (24-0).

Up next, the Warriors face No. 1 Harrisburg and quarterback Jacob Knuth. The Minnesota commit has recorded 757 passing yards and seven touchdown passes this season. The Tigers also feature skilled playmakers Gavin Ross, Andrew Walter and Lincoln Carlson.

The Warriors are led by quarterback Max Thomson (689 passing yards/5 touchdowns), along with running backs Blessing Taniah, Elijah Taniah and receivers Tommy Peterson and Noah Robertson.
