Winnebago and Pine Ridge played two classic games in 2023, so no reason to think Thursday’s showdown in Nebraska won’t be any different. Pine Ridge beat Mahpiya Luta, 55-0, last week and Winnebago blanked Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Tiospaye Topa, 44-0.

The Winnebago Indians have been hit by graduation hard in each of the last three years but coach Adam James just seems to plug in new players like Adarius Flemiester, Elijah White Bear and Raiden Decora.

Folks over in Pine Ridge are well aware of the Marvin Richard III to Dominic Ghost Bear, but senior running back Daniel Davis had a solid outing in Week 1 and looks to be one of the upper-tier running backs in the All-Nations Football Conference.

It took Todd County a half to find its footing but the defending Class 9A champions put it together late and defeated Little Wound, 48-22. There are some new faces but running back Ty Valandra did the work with 20 carries for 179 yards and three touchdowns. Falcon quarterback Chris Ellert passed for 88 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 43 yards and two touchdowns.

Little Wound’s Cashus Hunter helped the Mustangs, completing 8-of-15 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Kinyan Luta Catches Enemy who caught two passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. Daelyn Lebeuax 1 tackle and two interceptions.

Other Class 9A games this week

Todd County (1-0) at McLaughlin (0-1)

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Tiospaye Topa (0-1) at Mahpiya Luta (0-1)

Little Wound (0-1) at St. Francis Indian (1-0)

Crazy Horse has breakout win over Crow Creek to open football season

In recent years the Crazy Horse Chiefs have become a basketball power in Region 7B but the football team has never won more than three games. That could be changing as evidenced by a week one 58-6 win and their first 50-point win since joining the All-Nations Football Conference. Former Pine Ridge athlete Jacob Dreamer is in his first year of coaching football.

“At the start of practice the kids were eager to learn but we had to go back and re-learn some fundamentals,” Dreamer said. “The kids are buying into everything we’ve been throwing at them.”

Dreamer said Jacob High Horse had four touchdowns and more than 150 yards rushing. After the game, High Horse told Dreamer that was his first touchdown of his life and heAll Nations Weekly - Pine Ridge at Winnebago is early-season Class 9A showdown broke out four of them for the first game of his senior year.

The Chiefs have a stiff test this week as they travel to Lower Brule, which beat Flandreau Indian, 68-0, last week. Nate Middletent ran for 150 yards and had three touchdowns in last week’s game. The Sioux have an extremely strong program and football is the center stage at least for fall sports.

Class B schedule Week 2

Crow Creek (0-1) at Flandreau Indian (0-1)
