Bennett County girls among record breakers at Howard Wood Dakota Relays

SIOUX FALLS — Records continued to fall on a nearly pristine day for track and field.

During Day 2 of the 100th annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays, sunny conditions led to another day full of broken records at Howard Wood Stadium. 

Nine meet records were either broken or tied during the prestigious event, which attracts thousands of athletes and spectators from the upper Midwest. 

Here’s a rundown of the meet records broken during Saturday’s action. 

  • The Bennett County girls quartet of Peyson O'Neill, Macy Claussen, Harley Harris and Reagan O'Neill set the Class B 400-meter relay record in :48.71, shattering Ipswich’s record of :50.49 in 2015. 

  • The Rapid City Stevens girls quartet of Maya Khachikian, Riley Willet, Ava Holzwarth and Ella Bradeen tied the Class AA 400-meter relay record in :48.33, tying Fargo Davies time from 2017.  

  • The Flandreau girls quartet of Ella Hoffman, Morgan Sheppard, Kiley Westberry and Faith Wiese set the Class A sprint medley relay record in 4:10.76, breaking Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s record of 4:10.97 in 2023.

  • The Sioux Falls Christian foursome of Halle Braun, Ellie Maddox, Sadie Pettengill and Anna Vyn set the Class A 1,600-meter relay record in 3:59.63, breaking its own record of 4:00.58 from last season.

  • The Sioux Falls Lincoln quartet of Mikey Roche, Isaac Herrboldt, Evan Abild and Griffin Fischer set the Class AA 1,600-meter relay record in 3:18.80, breaking Legacy, North Dakota’s mark of 3:18.95 in 2023. 

  • Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Libby Castelli set the girls 1,600-meter run in 4:48.85, breaking O’Gorman’s Alea Hardie’s record of 4:53.60 in 2022. 

  • Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Kenya Harris tied Brookings’ Alexis Gannon’s record of 39-8.25 in the triple jump from 2014. 

  • Bishop Heelan Catholic Sioux, Iowa’s Hunter Wauhob set the boys 110-meter hurdles record in :14.23, edging Tea Area’s Erik Hill’s record of :14.24 in 2011. 

  • Aberdeen Central’s Dannica Sheets set the girls special Olympics 100-meter dash in :15.17, breaking the previous record of :15.26.
