Class A SoDak 16 Previews - Mahpiya Luta, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte set for rematch

The Class A boys basketball SoDak 16 contests are March 10, with the eight winners qualifying for the Class A state tournament on March 19-21 in Rapid City. 

Here’s a look at all eight of the SoDak 16 games, which are at neutral sites scattered throughout the state. 


No. 1 West Central (21-0) vs. No. 16 Webster Area (14-8)

MADISON — West Central is the last undefeated Class A team still standing.

The Trojans need one more win for its second straight Class A state tournament berth. Webster Area, which is looking for its first trip since 1982, will play West Central at 7 p.m., at Madison High School in the No. 1 vs. No. 16 matchup. 

West Central owns wins over SoDak 16 qualifiers Groton Area (69-42), Pine Ridge (87-42), Sioux Falls Christian (64-55), St. Thomas More (46-42), Lennox (45-33), Clark/Willow Lake (55-52), Flandreau (72-42) and Hamlin (69-48).

West Central defeated Dell Rapids in Region 3A action. The Trojans are powered by all-staters Connor Mebius (5-foot-10 junior guard) and Will Kuhl, a 6-foot-10 senior headed to play at Division II Northern State University. 

Webster Area defeated Redfield (85-64) and Britton-Hecla (78-57) in Region 1A action for a SoDak 16 berth. Against the Braves, Jack Shoemaker scored 22 points and Seth Lesnar added 19 points. Matthew Mount (18 points), and Jeron McCreary (13 points) also contributed to the win. 


No. 2 Sioux Falls Christian (19-1) vs. No. 15 Wagner (16-6)

MADISON — Sioux Falls Christian needs one more win for an 11th straight Class A state tourney berth. 

Wagner, which is looking for its first trip since 1974, will look to pull the upset at 5:30 p.m., CT at Madison High School. 

The Chargers have played in the past three state championships, including a 2025 state title. Sioux Falls Christian’s lone defeat was a 64-55 setback against No. 1 West Central on Jan. 6. The Comets own wins over SoDak 16 qualifiers Lennox (64-38), Rapid City Christian (65-43), Clark/Willow Lake (71-60) and St. Thomas More (66-38). Christian also defeated Class AA state tourney qualifier Huron (66-61). 

The Chargers are led by all-stater Brant Wassenaar, who has multiple Division I basketball scholarship offers. 

Wagner defeated Bon Homme (77-42) and Parker-Marion (74-58) in Region 5A action to earn a spot in the SoDak 16. Against PM, Ky Arpan had 22 points and nine rebounds. Jesse Zephier had 20 points and seven rebounds. Carlos Galindo totaled 16 points, nine rebounds and two steals for Wagner.


No. 3 Clark/Willow Lake (19-2) vs. No. 14 McCook Central/Montrose (15-6) 

WATERTOWN — Clark/Willow Lake is one win away from a second consecutive Class A state tournament berth. Standing in its way is McCook Central/Montrose, which is looking for its first berth since 2010. 

The Cyclones and Fighting Cougars will play at 8 p.m., CT in Watertown. 

CWL’s lone two losses were against Class A No. 1 West Central (55-52) and Class A No. 2 Sioux Falls Christian (71-60). The Cyclones picked up wins over SoDak 16 qualifiers Groton Area (56-39), Castlewood (47-36), De Smet (73-42), Flandreau (48-38) and Hamlin (58-50) during the regular season. 

CWL defeated Elkton-Lake Benton (93-35) in the Region 2A tourney for a spot in the SoDak 16. Against the Elks, CWL’s Sully Felberg finished with 30 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Bo Begeman added 22 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Chris Bevers totaled 19 points and three assists. Jakob Steen added 10 points and five assists. Will Hovde added 11 points.

MCM is riding a three-game winning streak, including a 35-29 win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton (35-29) in the Region 5A tourney. 

Against the Titans, Andrew Sabers led MCM with 12 points. Owen Schmidt added eight points, Dawson Dorr collected eight points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks while Ben Wiebersick added five assists and two steals in the win.


No. 4 Hamlin (19-3) vs. No. 13 Rapid City Christian (14-8)

CHAMBERLAIN — One year after playing in the Class A semifinals, Hamlin and Rapid City Christian will play for a state tourney berth. 

The Chargers defeated the Comets, 57-42, in last season’s Class A semifinal en route to a runner-up finish. They will face off at 7 p.m., CT on Tuesday in Chamberlain. 

Hamlin is looking for its fourth straight Class A state tournament berth, and has been a semifinalist each of the past three seasons. 

The Chargers have lost three games against SoDak 16 qualifiers Groton Area (55-50), West Central (69-48) and Clark/Willow Lake (58-50). Hamlin knocked off SoDak 16 qualifiers Flandreau (62-47), Castlewood (53-37), De Smet (80-63), Viborg-Hurley (57-39), Lennox (59-53) and Pine Ridge (64-51) during the regular season. 

Hamlin defeated Florence-Henry (73-33) and Sioux Valley (67-44) in the Region 2A tournament. Against Sioux Valley, Jackson Wadsworth finished with 24 points and four 3-pointers. Boden Stevenson added 23 points and four 3-pointers. Aiden Abraham added seven points and Trig Heinrich scored six points. Jack Stormo scored five points.

Rapid City Christian is looking for its third consecutive Class A state tourney appearance. During the regular season, the Comets lost to SoDak 16 qualifiers Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (58-48), St. Thomas More (59-45), Sioux Falls Christian (65-43) and Mahpiya Luta (56-49). Rapid City Christian defeated Belle Fourche (56-28) and Hill City (68-40) in Region 8A action to earn a SoDak 16 berth. 

The Comets are led by Peyton Glenn, Sully Kieffer, Joaquin Petrik and Henry Koppmann. 


No. 5 Groton Area (17-4) vs. No. 12 Pine Ridge (14-8)

CHAMBERLAIN — Two recent Class A qualifiers will face off on Tuesday in Chamberlain.

Groton Area is looking for its third consecutive Class A state tourney berth, while Pine Ridge is chasing its second berth since 2024. The Tigers and Thorpes will play at 5:30 p.m., CT in Chamberlain. 

Groton enters the SoDak 16 on an eight-game winning streak, including a Region 1A win over Milbank (61-35). The Tigers lost to SoDak 16 qualifiers West Central (69-42) and Clark/Willow Lake (56-39), along with two losses against Vermillion (66-57, 70-51). Groton Area defeated SoDak 16 qualifier Hamlin (55-50) in the season opener. 

Against Milbank in the Region 1A tourney, Keegen Tracy led the Tigers with 15 points. Gage Sippel added 12 points and six rebounds, Karson Kak had 13 points and four rebounds while Ryder Johnson tallied six points and five boards in the win.

Pine Ridge has dropped games against SoDak 16 qualifiers Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (55-43), Viborg-Hurley (58-49), West Central (87-42), Lennox (58-28) and Hamlin (64-51). The Thorpes own wins over SoDak 16 qualifiers Dupree (71-39), Wall (70-67), Freeman (79-66) and Mahpiya Luta (70-56). 

Pine Ridge is powered by Marvin Richard III, a senior guard headed to Division I South Dakota. Richard III is South Dakota’s sixth all-time leading scorer with 2,662 career points. He recently scored a state record 73 points in a Region 7A win over Lakota Tech. He added a 40-point outing against Winner to advance to the SoDak 16. 


No. 6 Stanley County (19-2) vs. No. 11 Flandreau (15-7) 

MILLER — Two teams unfamiliar with each other will play for a spot in the Class A state tournament. 

Stanley County and Flandreau haven’t played in recent history, and will face off at 7 p.m., CT Tuesday in Miller for a trip to state. 

Stanley County is riding a nine-game winning streak, including a 69-52 win over Chamberlain in the Region 6A tournament. The Buffaloes’ two defeats were against Class B SoDak 16 qualifiers Lyman (52-47) and Sully Buttes (69-63). Stanley County avenged the Lyman defeat in the regular-season finale, a 53-43 Buffalo win. 

Stanley County, which is looking for its first state tourney berth since 1997, is led by guards Eddie Duffy and Paxton Deal. Duffy, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, tossed in 29 points in Stanley County’s win over Chamberlain in the region tourney. Duffy and Deal, a 6-foot senior guard, are both career 1,000-point scorers.

Flandreau is looking for its first state tourney berth since 2022. The Fliers have lost six games against SoDak 16 qualifiers Hamlin (62-47), Castlewood (49-47), Clark/Willow Lake (48-38), West Central (72-42), McCook Central/Montrose (41-37) and De Smet (72-34). 

Flandreau defeated Garretson (71-66) and Baltic (45-41) in Region 3A action to secure a SoDak 16 berth. Against Baltic, Alexavier Poitra led the Fliers with 17 points. Xavier Bien added 16 points and four steals, while Luke Sheppard totaled 10 points and eight rebounds in the win.


No. 7 Lennox (17-5) vs. No. 10 St. Thomas More (16-5)

WINNER — Lennox edged St. Thomas More, 51-49, at the Hanson Classic on Jan. 24 in Mitchell.

The Orioles and Warriors will square off again for a spot in the Class A boys basketball tournament. 

The rematch is 7 p.m., CT Tuesday in Winner. 

Lennox, which is gunning for back-to-back Class A state tournament berths, is riding an 11-game winning streak. The Orioles lost to SoDak 16 qualifiers Sioux Falls Christian (64-38), Groton Area (57-48), West Central (45-33) and Hamlin (59-53) during the regular season. 

The Orioles edged top-10 team Vermillion twice this season, including a 53-49 decision in the Region 4A tourney to advance to the SoDak 16. 

In the region contest, Aiden Hanssen and Tate Gerdes each dropped 18-point double-doubles. Hanssen had 18 points and 12 rebounds while Gerdes added 18 points and 13 boards in the win.

The Cavaliers are chasing their first state tourney berth since 2022. In addition to the Lennox loss, STM also lost to SoDak 16 qualifiers West Central (46-42) and Sioux Falls Christian (66-38) during the season. 

STM qualified for the SoDak 16 after a 54-37 win over Lead-Deadwood in the Region 8A tournament. Against the Golddiggers, Wyatt Gylten scored 17 points and Ashton Paulsen added 12 points. Baron Slusarski had 10 points and Broeden Sales scored nine points. 


No. 8 Mahpiya Luta (18-3) vs. No. 9 Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (19-3) 

STURGIS — Here we go again.

Mahpiya Luta outlasted Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, 76-74, in double overtime for the boys Lakota Nation Invitational Oceti Sakowin championship on Dec. 20 in Rapid City. Mahpiya Luta, which rallied back from a 14-point deficit, will now face the Braves for a spot in the Class A boys basketball tournament. 

The rematch is 6 p.m., MT Tuesday at Sturgis High School.  

Mahpiya Luta, which is looking for its first state tourney berth since 2018, dropped two games against Class A SoDak 16 qualifiers Pine Ridge (70-56) and St. Thomas More (64-34). Mahpiya Luta also lost to Class AA Spearfish (54-39). 

Mahpiya Luta qualified for the SoDak 16 after edging Little Wound (62-61) in the Region 7A tournament. Mahpiya Luta features a balanced-scoring attack, with eight players averaging six or more points per game. Freshman Riley Brave (11.4 ppg) and senior Braylon Little (11.1 ppg) are the lone players that average double figures. 

The Braves are looking for their first state tourney berth since 2014. CEB also lost to Stanley County (67-52) and Mobridge-Pollock (58-49) during the regular season. The Braves avenged the Mobridge-Pollock loss in the Region 6A tournament, a 46-30 CEB victory. 

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte is led by eight seniors, including guards Damien Clown, Levi Elk Nation, Nehemiah Veaux and Nicholas Woods II. Against Mobridge-Pollock, Clown finished with 14 points. Veaux and Woods II recorded eight points apiece. Elk Nation had six points.
