Class B SoDak 16 Previews - Centerville plays Highmore-Harrold in Mitchell

The Class B girls basketball SoDak 16 contests are March 5, with the eight winners qualifying for the Class B state tournament on March 12-14 in Brookings. 

Here’s a look at all eight of the SoDak 16 games, which are at neutral sites scattered throughout the state. 


No. 1 Lyman (20-2) vs. No. 16 McIntosh (14-7)

FORT PIERRE — Lyman will look for a third consecutive trip to the state tournament while McIntosh eyes its first state tourney run since 2003.

The top-seeded Raiders face off with the No. 16 seeded Tigers on Thursday at 6 p.m., CT, at Stanley County High School with a trip to Brookings on the line. Lyman is the No. 1 ranked team in the latest prep media poll with eight first-place votes. The Raiders have already knocked off multiple ranked teams this season, including Class B No. 10 Freeman (60-29) and Class B No. 4 Parkston (60-50) with its only losses coming against Class B No. 2 Bennett County (76-58) and Bishop Heelan Catholic, Iowa (64-32). Lyman is led by senior forward Mak Scott, who recently scored her 2,000th career point, along with sister Jordyn Scott, Bree Smart, Brooke Montgomery and Kenzie Wagner. Mak Scott currently has 2,017 career points, the 35th most in South Dakota girls basketball history. 

McIntosh comes into Thursday’s matchup as a heavy underdog sitting at No. 42 in Class B girls basketball seed points. The Tigers defeated Dupree (59-43) and Faith (33-31) in Region 8B action. McIntosh is led by sophomore guard Mikki Maher, who poured in 26 points with five 3-pointers in the region win over Dupree, along with junior Riley Glines and seventh-grader Dusti Haugen.


No. 2 Parkston (19-3) vs. No. 15 De Smet (11-11)

MITCHELL — The Trojans look to go back to the state tournament, while the Bulldogs enter with a three-year state tournament drought overhead.

No. 2 Parkston matches up with No. 15 De Smet inside Mitchell High School Thursday at 5:30 p.m., CT. The Trojans enter the SoDak 16 with just three losses on the year to Class A No. 4 Wagner (48-37), Class B No. 1 Lyman (60-50) and Class B No. 3 Ethan (41-31), but have picked up big wins over Class B No. 10 Freeman (55-46), Corsica-Stickney (56-47), Miller (57-40) and Sanborn Central-Woonsocket (57-47) in the regular season. The Trojans are averaging 54.8 points per game while surrendering just 34 points a game defensively, good for the third best defense in Class B girls basketball. Parkston is led by juniors Berkley Ziebart and Keeara Oakley, who both scored their 1,000th career point this season, along with junior Morgan Maxwell.

De Smet will continue its Cinderella story after entering the postseason as the No. 5 seed in Region 2B. The Bulldogs knocked off Wessington Springs (58-51) and outlasted top-seeded Arlington (87-80 in 2OT) to make it to the SoDak 16. The Bulldogs are led by 6-foot senior guard/forward and returning all-state second-team nominee Hazel Luethmers, who recently became the all-time leading scorer in De Smet girls basketball history with over 1,600 career points. The Bulldogs also have a plethora of key senior contributors including Brooke Jennings, Harper Anderson, Megan Dylla, Ivey Schoenfelder and Audi Currier.


No. 3 Bennett County (19-3) vs. No. 14 Ipswich (15-7)

WINNER — The defending state champs are on the hunt for a repeat, while Ipswich looks for its first state girls basketball tournament since 2019.

No. 3 Bennett County faces No. 14 Ipswich Thursday at Winner High School at 6 p.m., CT, in an East River vs West River matchup. The Warriors bursted onto the season last season as Class B state champions after defeating Sanborn Central-Woonsocket, 71-61, for the title last season. This year, BC is establishing themselves as a top contender in the state with just three losses against Lakota Tech (81-70), Class A No. 1 Mahpiya Luta (80-35) and Class B No. 3 Ethan (76-48). The Warriors have also knocked off No. 1 seeded Lyman, 76-58, on Feb. 17 and are averaging the second most points in Class B girls basketball at 66.9 points per game. BC is led by many familiar faces including returning second-team all-staters Reagan and Peyson O’Neill along with Harley Harris and Madi Waln as well.

The Tigers will take the trip south after making its way through Region 6B as the No. 3 seed, defeating Gettysburg (52-34) and avenging a previous loss to Herreid-Selby Area (63-48) in the SoDak 16 qualifier. Ipswich averages 45.6 points per game while surrendering 38.6 points per contest defensively and have picked up wins over North Central twice (53-44 and 45-36). The Tigers are led by seniors Brianna Geditz, Gabby Wald and Marley Guthmiller along with junior Tristan Geditz as well. Guthmiller totaled 23 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and two assists while Wald added 18 points and three steals in the win over Herreid-Selby Area, and Tristan Geditz netted seven points and 11 boards as well.


No. 4 Ethan (20-2) vs. No. 13 Deubrook Area (13-9)

PARKER — The Rustlers will look to earn its way back into the state tournament after a one-year drought while the Dolphins try to make it two straight years in the big dance on Thursday.

No. 4 Ethan matches up with No. 13 Deubrook Area at Parker High School Thursday at 7 p.m. after a sour ending last season, losing to Dell Rapids St. Mary in the Region 3B semifinal. The Rustlers have returned and enter the SoDak 16 after stunning Sanborn Central-Woonsocket, 43-36, in the semifinal. Ethan is ranked No. 3 in the latest prep media poll and have picked multiple ranked wins this season including Class B No. 2 Bennett County (76-48) and Class B No. 4 Parkston (41-31) with its only two losses coming against Class A No. 4 Wagner (59-50) and Class B No. 10 Freeman (53-51). The Rustlers are averaging 62 points per game (3rd in Class B) while allowing 34.3 points per game (4th in Class B) on the other end, and are led by a senior trio of Taziah Hawkins, a Morningside women’s basketball commit, Rachel Klock and Marissa Storm, a Dordt women’s basketball commit.


No. 5 Colman-Egan (21-1) vs. No. 12 Warner (16-6)

HURON — Only one team stands in the way of Colman-Egan ending its 16-year state tournament drought.

No. 5 Colman-Egan takes on No. 12 Warner Thursday at 7 p.m. inside the Huron Arena, looking to punch its ticket to the state tournament for the first time since 2009. The Hawks will enter the SoDak 16 after a near-flawless regular season. CE started the year 19-0 before losing to Class B No. 5 Chester (58-35) in the final game of the regular season. The Hawks were able to avenge its loss to the Flyers a week later in the Region 3B semifinal, 49-32, and has also picked up other ranked wins over Class B No. 10 Freeman, 48-47 and Class A No. 9 West Central, 46-44. CE is averaging 48.4 points per game while surrendering 36.6 points defensively, and are highlighted by its lone senior and returning all-state second-teamer Brynlee Landis, along with standout guards in junior Quinn Meyer and sophomore Jolie Flatten. Landis, a Dordt women’s basketball commit, finished with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists in the region win over Chester, Quinn Meyer added 13 points and five boards, while Jolie Flatten had 11 points as well.

Warner will enter the Huron Area after working its way through Region 1B as the No. 3 seed. The Monarchs defeated Waverly-South Shore (45-22) and Northwestern (36-34) in Region 1B play to earn a spot in the SoDak 16. The Monarchs also picked up big wins in the regular season over Northwestern (32-29), Ipswich (41-29) and Herreid-Selby Area (48-45). Warner is averaging 47.4 points per game while surrendering 38.4 points a contest defensively, and are led by Miah Leidholt, Kaydee Mackner and Olivia Marcuson.


No. 6 Harding County (21-1) vs. No. 11 Jones County (15-5)

SPEARFISH — It’s a West River matchup for a spot in Brookings.

No. 6 Harding County faces No. 11 Jones County at Spearfish High School at 6 p.m., MT, for a third consecutive trip to the Class B state tournament. The Ranchers enter the SoDak 16 on a 12-game winning streak with notable wins over Lemmon twice (51-21 and 66-33) and McIntosh (80-17) this season. HC’s only loss of the year came on Jan. 17 to Corsica-Stickney (53-46) at the girls Hanson Classic. The Ranchers are dominating opponents this season with an average margin of victory by 40.6 points, leading Class B girls basketball in scoring offense (67.4) and scoring defense (26.8). HC has a multitude of playmakers including junior Macey Wendt, who totaled 19 points in the Region 8B semifinal win over Timber Lake, and Kamry Padden, Maci Wammen and Carson Page.

On the other side, Jones County is looking to make it back to the state tournament for the first time since 2023. The Coyotes have won 10 of its last 11 contests including wins over North Central (54-39) and Kadoka Area (45-43) in the Region semifinal with its only loss coming against Class B No. 1 Lyman (57-34) in that stretch. JC is averaging 48.4 points per game while surrendering 38.7 points defensively and are highlighted by sophomore BreAna Aske, freshman Aubrey Tucker and junior Sunny Valburg. Aske is averaging 13.4 points and 6.9 rebounds, Tucker averages 11.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and two assists while Valburg nets 8.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game.


No. 7 Centerville (20-2) vs. No. 10 Highmore-Harrold (18-4)

MITCHELL — While Centerville eyes a third-straight state tourney run, Highmore-Harrold is seeking its first state tournament trip in 15 years.

No. 7 Centerville matches up with No. 10 Highmore-Harrold at 7 p.m. for a spot in the Class B state tournament. The Tornadoes finished third at last season’s state tournament after winning the state championship in 2024. This season, Centerville quietly enters the SoDak 16 as one of the hottest teams in the class as winners of 14 straight games, with its last loss coming against Gayville-Volin on Jan. 6 (57-46). The Tornadoes have picked up major wins this season over Irene-Wakonda (56-32), Class B No.10 Freeman (57-40), and most recently Gayville-Volin (43-33) in the Region 4B semifinal. Centerville is averaging 59.5 points per game (4th in Class B) while giving up 35.4 points per game (6th in Class B) on defense, and are led by returning all-state second-team selection Izzie Eide, Peyton Hansen, Brea Austin, Lydia Austin and Tessa Eide.

The Pirates are one win away from its first trip to the state tournament since 2011. Highmore-Harrold enters the SoDak 16 with four losses on the year to Sanborn Central-Woonsocket (52-43), Class B No. 1 Lyman (56-52), Class B No. 8 Aberdeen Roncalli (59-34) and Miller (47-45), while earning major wins over Jones County (47-42), Sanborn Central-Woonsocket (53-48), Ipswich (55-24) and North Central (53-41) in the Region 6B semifinal. The Pirates are averaging 52.5 points a game while giving up 36 points defensively, led by longtime head coach Mike Ring who recently surpassed 400 career girls basketball wins this season. HH is highlighted by sophomore Jada Baloun, who scored her 1,000th career point with a 27-point performance over North Central, along with Autumn Fallis, Elle Stagg and Tenley McDonnell.


No. 8 Waubay/Summit (20-2) vs. No. 9 Corsica-Stickney (16-5)

HURON — Waubay/Summit is one win away from history while Corsica-Stickney looks for a return to the state tournament.

No. 8 Waubay/Summit takes on No. 9 Corsica-Stickney inside the Huron Arena at 5:30 p.m. Thursday as the Mustangs look for its first state tournament appearance in co-op history. Summit last made the state tournament in 2015 while Waubay hasn’t been since 1993, but the two schools have yet to make it as a co-op. The Mustangs are currently on a 12-game winning streak with its last loss coming against Milbank (57-42) on Jan. 20. The Mustangs have knocked off notable opponents in Arlington (59-42), Northwestern (60-47) and Warner (45-34). WS is averaging 53.5 points per game while allowing the second lowest points defensively at 33.5 a contest, and are led by juniors Addison Heinje, who holds division-II college basketball offers from Wayne State College and Northern State, Caley Boik and seventh grader Brynlee Amdahl.

The Jaguars are eyeing its first run to the Class B state tournament since 2022 when it took home third place. This season, CS has lost four of its five games to top-ranked teams in the state, including Class B No. 4 Parkston (56-47), Class B No. 1 Lyman (44-35), Class A No. 4 Wagner (59-29) and Class B No. 3 Ethan (46-35). But the Jaguars have managed big wins over teams such as Sanborn Central-Woonsocket (38-31) and Class B No. 8 Harding County (53-46). CS defeated Andes Central/Dakota Christian (68-22) and Gregory (70-46) in Region 5B play to earn a spot in the SoDak 16, and are averaging 51.6 points per game while surrendering 36.7 points defensively. CS is led by senior Sophie DeLange, junior Braylee Bordewyk and sophomore Hadynn Johnson. DeLange recorded 18 points in the win over Gregory while Bordewyk and Johnson each poured in 17 points as well.
