Class B SoDak 16 Previews - Leola/Frederick Area, Lyman to face off in Huron

The Class B boys basketball SoDak 16 contests are March 10, with the eight winners qualifying for the Class B state tournament on March 19-21 in Aberdeen. 

Here’s a look at all eight of the SoDak 16 games, which are at neutral sites scattered throughout the state. 


No. 1 Viborg-Hurley (19-3) vs. No. 16 White River (12-10)

MITCHELL — The top-seeded Cougars are one win from a third-straight trip to Aberdeen.

No. 1 Viborg-Hurley will meet No. 16 White River in Mitchell for a spot in the Class B state tournament at 5:30 p.m. in Mitchell

The red-hot Cougars enter the SoDak 16 after defeating Avon (59-39) and Centerville (58-35) in Region 4B play. VH has also knocked off multiple ranked opponents this season including Class B No. 3 Freeman (73-64), Class B No. 8 Wall (61-51), and also have notable wins over Bridgewater-Emery (50-44), Pine Ridge (58-49) and Leola/Frederick Area (57-42). The Cougars are averaging 57.4 points per game while allowing just 43.9 points per game defensively, and are led by seniors Brady Schroedermeier, Braydyn Morrison, Nolan Kolthoff, Walker Warwick and Jake Austin.

For White River, the Tigers are hungry for a return to the Class B state tournament after missing the tourney last season. White River defeated Jones County (68-58) and Kadoka Area (60-54) in Region 7B action, and are averaging 58.5 points per game while also allowing 58.5 points defensively. The Tigers are led by sophomore guard Bryson One Star, an all-conference guard. 


No. 2 Freeman (20-2) vs. No. 15 Lower Brule (12-10) 

MITCHELL — The Flyers are soaring into the SoDak 16.

No. 2 Freeman matchup with No. 15 Lower Brule in an East vs West showdown in Mitchell High School at 7 p.m.

The Flyers are riding high into the SoDak 16 following a big win over No. 2 seeded Parkston (63-54) in Region 4B action. Freeman has also knocked off two other ranked opponents this season in Class B No. 8 Wall (72-48) and Class B No. 5 Wessington Springs (51-48). The Flyers, which is on an 18-game winning streak, are averaging 65.4 points per game while giving up just 46.4 points defensively and are led by sophomore David Walter, who poured in 30 points against Parkston, and senior Tate Sorensen.

Lower Brule will come into the SoDak 16 following back-to-back wins over Burke (68-50) and Andes Central/Dakota Christian (87-62) in Region 5B play. The Sioux are averaging 58.6 points per game while allowing just 57 points per game defensively and are led by Ben Antelope and Kristian Antelope.


No. 3 De Smet (18-4) vs. No. 14 Ipswich (14-8) 

HURON — After an emotional win in the Huron Arena, the Bulldogs will reset for a shot at getting to Aberdeen in the same building.

No. 3 De Smet matches up with No. 14 Ipswich at 5:30 p.m. following its double-digit comeback win over Deubrook Area (53-51) in the Region 2B semifinal win. The Bulldogs are on a seven-game winning streak including notable wins over Flandreau (72-34), Estelline/Hendricks (78-42) and Deubrook Area in that stretch. De Smet also has wins over Deubrook Area (48-45), Wessington Springs (71-53) and Baltic (59-48) earlier this season. The Bulldogs are averaging 64 points per game while allowing 49.4 points per game defensively, and are led by senior Grant Wilkinson, a 6-foot-10 center who recorded 27 points, 13 rebounds and three steals against Deubrook Area, Noah Luethmers, Slayten Wilkinson and Carter Wilkinson.

For Ipswich, the Tigers advanced to the SoDak 16 following wins over Wakpala (57-39) and Gettysburg (61-59) in Region 6B action. Ipswich is averaging 52.5 points per game while allowing 51.2 points per game defensively, and are led by Hayden Schlosser, Shay Knust, Josh Rausch and Jaxon Holt. Schlosser totaled 23 points and five rebounds in the win over Gettysburg, Knust had 14 points and four boards while Rausch netted 10 points and seven rebounds, including a game-winning putback layup at the buzzer.


No. 4 Aberdeen Christian (19-3) vs. No. 13 Sioux Falls Lutheran (16-6)

WATERTOWN — The Knights will try to earn a spot back home while the Eagles look to make school history in Watertown.

No. 4 Aberdeen Christian faces No. 13 Sioux Falls Lutheran for a spot in the state tournament at 6 p.m. inside Watertown High School.

The Knights are back in the SoDak 16 after defeating Waverly-South Shore (58-47) and Warner (61-56) in Region 1B action. AC has won 12 of its last 13 games and have knocked off notable opponents in Leola/Frederick Area (70-62), Waubay/Summit (75-48), Ipswich (63-26) and Webster Area (66-55). The Knights are averaging 62.1 points per game while surrendering 49 points per game defensively, and are led by Brooks Jett, Grady Jett, Jett Johnson and Luke Kaiser.

Sioux Falls Lutheran is one win away from its state basketball tournament for either boys or girls, and will have all the momentum following its upset win over top-seeded Bridgewater-Emery in Region 3B action. The Eagles have notched notable wins this season over Centerville (41-40), Howard (60-48) and Bridgewater-Emery (52-43), and are averaging 59.1 points per game while giving up 49.6 points per game defensively. SFL is led by senior Sam Borg, sophomore’s Rowen Becker and Kade Matthies as well as freshman Drew Knobloch. Matthies guided the Eagles over BE with 22 points while Becker netted 10 points as well.


No. 5 Castlewood (19-3) vs. No. 12 Timber Lake (15-7)

MILLER — Castlewood’s drive for five continues in Miller.

The Warriors, who won last season’s Class B state championship, are gunning for their fifth consecutive state tournament appearance. The Warriors will play Timber Lake at 5:30 p.m., CT on Tuesday in Miller. 

Castlewood lost two games against Class A SoDak 16 qualifiers Hamlin (53-37) and Clark/Willow Lake (47-36) during the regular season. The Warriors knocked off Class B SoDak 16 qualifier De Smet (42-39) and Class A SoDak 16 qualifier Flandreau (49-47) during the regular season.

Castlewood defeated James Valley Christian (70-51) and Wessington Springs (55-53) in Region 2B action to secure a SoDak 16 berth. 

Against Wessington Springs, Castlewood’s Kamden Keszler finished with 18 points and three rebounds. Brody Bass added 14 points, eight rebounds and three 3-pointers. Will Aderhold totaled 13 points, three rebounds, three blocks and three 3-pointers. Leonard Wernke had six points and four rebounds.

Timber Lake is looking for its first state tournament berth since back-to-back trips in 2018 and ‘19. The Panthers earned wins over SoDak 16 qualifiers Sully Buttes (56-51) and Aberdeen Christian (52-48) during the regular season. Timber Lake lost to SoDak 16 qualifiers Dupree (55-51, 63-60) and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (74-66) during the season. 

Timber Lake topped Bison (49-21) and Faith (63-52) in Region 8B action. The Panthers, who have one senior on the roster, are powered by junior Kanton Hunt and sophomore Jackson Bigger.  


No. 6 Wall (18-4) vs. No. 11 Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (17-5) 

KADOKA — Wall will make a quick trip to Kadoka for a shot at another Class B state tourney berth. 

The Eagles, who placed fifth at state last season, will play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket at 6 p.m., MT in Kadoka. 

Wall dropped a 72-48 decision against Freeman on Feb. 14 at the Corn Palace, but is on a five-game winning streak entering the SoDak 16. The Eagles defeated Philip (87-54) and New Underwood (81-65) in Region 7B to qualify for the SoDak 16. 

Wall is powered by all-state junior guard Teelan Kjerstad, who averages 28 points per game and is closing in on 1,500 career points. Senior guard Emmet Dinger (16 ppg) also averages double figures. 

SCW knocked off Dell Rapids St. Mary (43-31) and Ethan (51-47) in Region 3B action for a SoDak 16 berth. Against Ethan, Grant Edwards led SCW with 15 points and eight rebounds, Sam Baruth added 14 points, including four 3-pointers, with two steals and a block. McCoy Schulz recorded nine points and seven rebounds, Eli White added eight points, five rebounds and three steals while Landon Jensen recorded five points and three rebounds in the win.

The Blackhawks are looking for their first state tourney berth as a co-op. 


No. 7 Leola/Frederick Area (17-5) vs. No. 10 Lyman (16-6) 

HURON — Two recent Class B qualifiers will play for a trip to Aberdeen. 

Leola/Frederick Area will play Lyman at 7 p.m., CT on Tuesday at the Huron Arena for a Class B state tourney berth. 

LFA is looking for its second trip since 2024, while Lyman qualified in 2021 and ‘25. 

The Titans lost four games against SoDak 16 qualifiers Aberdeen Christian (70-62), Viborg-Hurley (57-42), Groton Area (75-29) and Webster Area (75-64). LFA enters the postseason on a four-game winning streak, including region wins over Wilmot (60-48) and Waubay-Summit (66-56). Against WS, Winston Clark led LFA with 20 points and Westyn Thorpe netted 18 points. Milo Sumption added 15 points while Lucas Gulbranson poured in eight points as well.

Lyman’s season was highlighted by a Jones County Invitational boys basketball title. The Raiders outlasted Stanley County, 52-47, in overtime for the championship. Lyman enters the SoDak 16 on a three-game winning streak, including region wins over Mitchell Christian (65-29) and Corsica-Stickney (61-39). 

Against Corsica-Stickney, Dawsen Volmer finished with 20 points. Canyon Garnos added 12 points, MJ Diehm recorded 11 points, Cole Kieffer added eight points while Josiah Vaad added five points in the win.


No. 8 Sully Buttes (17-5) vs. No. 9 Dupree (18-4)

GETTYSBURG — Purple and gold will fill the Gettysburg gymnasium at 7 p.m., CT on Tuesday when the Chargers and Tigers play for a trip to Aberdeen. 

Sully Buttes enters the SoDak 16 on a five-game winning streak, including region wins over Highmore-Harrold (68-34) and Faulkton Area (55-44). Sully Buttes owns a win over SoDak 16 qualifiers Lyman (67-61), Ipswich (74-52) and Stanley County (69-63).

Against Faulkton in the region tourney, all-state guard Wesley Wittler led the way with 29 points. Wittler, a future Northwestern College football player, is closing in on 2,000 career points. Jett Yackley and Gavin Colson are also key contributors for the Chargers, who are looking for their first Class B berth since 2020 (canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic). 

Dupree is chasing its first state tournament berth since back-to-back appearances in 2012 and ‘13. The Tigers enter the SoDak 16 on a 13-game winning streak, including wins over Takini (99-21) and Harding County (72-53) in Region 8B action. 

Against Harding County, Jayden Marshall finished with 24 points. Tre White Wolf and Cruz Birkeland had 13 points apiece. Dayson Kennedy had 10 points. Marshall scored his 1,000th career point earlier this season.
