SIOUX FALLS — Kincade Lehman successfully defended his triple jump championship.

The senior from Custer won his second straight Class A boys triple jump championship with an impressive 48-feet, 6.5-inches, setting a meet record to begin the second day of the South Dakota state track and field championships at Howard Wood Field.

“It feels great,” Lehman said. “It’s kind of what my goal was to come in my junior and senior year and win it. I’ve been working hard over the offseason. That was the goal so I’m really happy to accomplish that”

Lehman’s final jump of 48-feet, 6.5 inches was just 0.75 inches shy of his personal record, but was still pleased with his state title worthy performance.

“My goal was 49-feet, obviously the goal is a PR,” Lehman said. “But I was expecting, if I jumped good, right around 48 (feet), and if I jumped bad probably 46-47, So I’m glad I did what I did.”

All six of Lehman’s jumps surpassed any jump from the other competitors in the field, but he still thinks he could’ve started on a better note Friday.

“I know what I’m capable of and if I’m jumping below what I’m capable of I’m never really satisfied,” said Lehman. “I think I definitely hold myself to a higher standard when I jump badly.”

But the future South Dakota State Jackrabbit was able to pull it all together in his final jump of his high school career to earn the meet record.

“The first five jumps were not very good,” Lehman said. “Towards the end of the season it just  hasn’t been clicking. In the last jump in finals, I was like ‘It’s the last jump in my final high school career, I might as well just go for it’. So I just attacked the jump and put everything together I’ve learned over the years and it finally clicked at the very end so I’m happy it did at this point and not the beginning of the year.”

As soon as Lehman hit the sand in his last jump, he was ecstatic knowing it was his best jump of the event.

“It was the best feeling ever,” Lehman said. “When I hit the sand and I knew it was a far jump right away, I was so happy. I was ecstatic, it was just so fun.”
