MURDO — Jones County freshman BreAna Aske went fast and far at April 10’s Gregory Invitational track and field meet.

Aske won the 200-meter dash (:27.92), the 400-meter dash (1:02.78) and soared to a new personal best in the long jump (16-09.5).

Aske hopes that she’s just getting started.

“My goal is to get down in the 57s and win a state title in the 400-meter dash,” Aske said. “In the 200-meter dash I want to run in the 26s and break the school record this season.”

Aske is no newcomer to track and field. At the 2024 Class B state track and field meet, she finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.78), seventh in the 200-meter dash (:27.75) and competed in the long jump.

When Aske was in seventh grade she made waves on the Jones County girls basketball team. On a Coyote team that qualified for the Class B state basketball tournament and featured collegiate athletes Mallory Valburg (Dakota Wesleyan volleyball), Jolie Dugan (Northern State cross-country and track) and Jadyn Jensen (Mount Marty basketball) Aske found a way to contribute.

During conditioning work, Aske often led the pack and pushed the varsity team to get better.

“It was very good to be in practice with them and I tried to push the pace when we ran,” she said. “It’s a little hard in practice without them but it’s been a great spring so far.”

Aske earned two medals at the state track meet in 2023, both in relays. The team of Emma Hunt, Jensen, Dugan and anchored by Aske finished fourth in the 1,600-meter relay (4:11. 49). She ran the 400-meter leg on the sprint medley team of Kendal Kinsley, Jensen and Dugan that finished seventh (4:29.38).

Aske is a multi-sport standout for the Coyotes competing in cross-country, basketball and track and field. Aske finished fourth in the 2024 Class B state cross country meet (22:29.21).

“I just do cross-country to push myself and stay in shape and that helps a lot with basketball,” she said.

A young Jones County basketball team filled with primarily underclassmen finished 13-11 this season. Many of those athletes went out for track this spring and helped the Coyotes finish third in the team standings at Gregory.

Aske, a leader amongst her peers sees the potential on her team and is doing her part to encourage them.

“We have a really good group of underclassmen and we are going to be really good for the next few years,” she said. “I’m really trying to help these younger girls. I know what they can do and giving them a little push is going to be good for our team
