The Mitchell High School announced the retirement of head girls basketball coach Dave Brooks following the 2025-26 season.

The Kernels finished with a record of 58-33 in three seasons under Brooks, including three trips to the Class AA state tournament.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have coached the Mitchell girls basketball team,” Brooks said in a release. “I have enjoyed my time working with the players and staff, and I appreciate the support and guidance I have received.”

Brooks was previously an assistant coach for the Kernels, and took over as head coach in the 2022-23 season.

“Coach Brooks' journey with the girls basketball program is a pretty incredible one,” Mitchell athletic director Cory Aadland said in a release. “What started as a hobby as an assistant coach turned into Coach Brooks being a staple of Mitchell Kernel Girls Basketball and the head coach of one of the most successful runs in program history. He brought a youthful energy to the program and his ability to develop meaningful relationships with the girls was a joy to watch. We thank him for his selfless service and wish him well in his retirement.”

The search for his replacement will begin immediately.
