MITCHELL — Lyman picked up another quality win on Friday.

The Class B No. 1 Raiders have stacked up wins over ranked foes throughout the season, and none bigger than a 60-50 win over Class B No. 2 Parkston at the DWU/Culver’s Classic at the Corn Palace.

The Raiders other signature wins included victories over Class AA Mitchell, Class A Mobridge-Pollock and quality Class B teams Corsica-Stickney, Wall and Highmore-Harrold. The Raiders improved to 17-1 with Friday’s win over Parkston (15-2).

“I feel like as we move into the postseason we gain momentum with these quality wins,” Lyman coach Cody Volmer said. “Like a Parkston and some of the other 10-win teams that we’ve beaten. It makes us when we get to the postseason be able to not get frustrated or nervous when we do get down in a game.”

The Raiders, who shot 47% from the field, were rarely down in the No. 1 vs. No. 2 contest. Lyman built a 21-point lead early in the third quarter, weathered a Trojan comeback attempt and defeated Parkston after losing to the Trojans twice last season.

“We were ready to beat them,” said Lyman senior Mak Scott, who totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds. “So I think it is just a weight off our shoulders that we know we can beat someone that beat us last year twice.”

Jordyn Scott added 18 points and Kenzie Wagner scored 12 points. Parkston’s Berkley Ziebart led the Trojans with 19 points, five rebounds and three 3-pointers.

Lyman led a 23-13 after the first quarter and 32-16 at halftime. The Trojans stretched the advantage to 21 points with 6:44 left in the third quarter.

The Trojans, however, chipped away at the deficit. But Lyman’s double-digit advantage was too much to overcome, and the Raiders earned the 10-point win.

“Fortunately we built ourselves that lead in the first half and we can hold it together and come away with a win,” Volmer said. “Obviously we don’t want to do two halves like that against a team of Parkston's caliber. But luckily we got out of here with a victory.”

Jordyn Scott played just 23 minutes due to foul trouble, fouling out late in the third quarter. Mak Scott, Jordyn’s older sister, helped shoulder the scoring load and finished 5-of-12 from the field in 32 minutes.

“Mak is our calming factor for our team,” Volmer said. “She is going to keep us grounded as far as ball control goes and I thought she did that when she needed to tonight.”

Lyman and Parkston will again have big games next week. Parkston will play Class B No. 5 Ethan on Feb. 16 at the Corn Palace. Lyman, meanwhile, will play at Bennett County on Feb. 17 in another ranked contest.
