Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central received a 6-foot-5, 250-pound boost last Friday.

The Blackhawks racked up a season-high 348 rushing yards on 47 carries and a big reason for it was the return of senior lineman Quinten Christensen.

The future South Dakota State University offensive lineman missed the first three games with an offseason knee injury. But made his season debut in WWSSC’s 26-14 win over Wagner to improve to 3-1.

“It really helped just to solidify our offensive line,” WWSSC coach Corey Flatten said. “We had like freshmen, sophomores, kind of rotating guys and then we got a DI athlete come in there.”

For Christensen, it was his first signifcant injury and said it was tough watching from the sidelines. That's why the return was that much sweeter.

“It’s a great feeling,” Christensen said. “I didn’t realize how much I loved football until I got to put the pads back on and hit some people. You don’t take it for granted. That’s for sure. It’s really nice to get out on the field with your high school friends.”

Christensen, who is an all-state lineman and last year’s Class B state heavyweight champ, lined up at left tackle against the Red Raiders. Christensen’s return bolstered the offensive line, which opened running lanes for Clay Olinger (236 yards/4 touchdowns). Olinger finished with an 8.1 yards per carry average in the win.

“It feels really good when they are getting those big runs down field,” Christensen said. “It isn't just me either. The rest of the line is putting in a lot of work, too.”

Christensen didn’t play on defense in his debut game, but will play both sides of the ball moving forward.

“We are going to see about defense next week,” Flatten said. “We just decided on offense this time. But talking to him, he felt good and he felt like he was in shape. I think he’s ready to roll.”
