Region cross-country roundup - Chamberlain teams sweep Region 4A meet

CHAMBERLAIN -- The Chamberlain cross-country teams captured team titles at Thursday’s Region 4A meet at Chamberlain Country Club.

The Chamberlain boys won the team title with 20 points on its home course, while Winner finished second with 28 points. Mobridge-Pollock and Sanborn Central/Woonsocket tied for third with 47 points. Mount Vernon/Plankinton (86) took fifth place. 

The Chamberlain girls scored 10 points to earn first place. Stanley County (34), Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (54) and Todd County (64) finished second-through-fourth, respectively. 

Chamberlain’s Dom Santiago won the 5,000-meter run in 16 minutes and 12 seconds. Winner’s Kade Watson came in second place in 16:46 and SCW’s Jeff Boschee (17:53) placed third. Todd County’s Thaddeus Allen (18:02) and Chamberlain’s Declan Tveit (18:07) took fourth and fifth, respectively. 

On the girls side, Mobridge-Pollock’s Heidi Olson won the race in 18:35. Chamberlain teammates Kinsey Evans (18:57) and Kylah Biggins (19:15) placed second and third, respectively. Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Suri Schmidt (19:48) and Chamberlain’s Aine Graesser (19:53) rounded out the top-five.

Milbank teams sweep Region 1A 

WEBSTER -- The Milbank teams swept the Region 1A cross-country meet at the Webster Golf Course on Thursday. 

The Milbank boys took the team title with 19 points, while the girls won with 23 points. 

Milbank’s Nick Batchelor (16:46) and Payton Brown (17:48) powered, finishing first and second in the 5,000-meter race. Tri-State’s Kaleb Foltz (17:48) placed third. Deuel’s Ricky Berndt (17:50) and Tyler O’Neill (17:54) took fourth and fifth, respectively. 

Great Plains Lutheran’s Halle Bauer covered the 5,000-meter run in 19:45 to earn individual medalist honors. Milbank’s Ashlynn Batchelor (19:53) and Dakota Hills’ Madison Zirbel (20:15) placed second and third, respectively. Deuel’s Jaycee Hourigan (21:34) and Great Plains Lutheran’s Taylor Bendix (22:25) rounded out the top-five. 


Sioux Falls Christian coasts to Region 2A titles

MADISON -- The Sioux Falls Christian teams easily claimed the Region 2A cross-country titles on Thursday the Madison Country Club. 

The Sioux Falls Christian boys won the team title with 10 points, while second-place Flandreau was 52 points behind the Chargers. The Sioux Falls Christian girls placed first with 15 points, while Flandreau was second with 40 points. 

Sioux Falls Christian’s Daniel Colby earned individual medalist honors in 17 minutes and three seconds, finishing 10 seconds ahead of teammate Patrick Vogel. Sioux Falls Christian’s Derrek VanderLeest (17:23.42) and Maksim Strizheus (17:47.32) took third and fourth, respectively. Baltic’s John Gronewold placed fifth in 17:49.92.

On the girls side, Sioux Falls Christian’s Ellie Maddox won the individual race in 18:55.61. Teammates Corinne Braun (19:49.62) and Anna Vyn (20:57.64) placed third and fifth, respectively. Sioux Valley’s Isabelle Bloker (19:25.38) took second place. Flandreau’s Faith Wiese (20:26.94) took fifth place. 


Ethan/Parkston, Lennox win Region 3A titles

BERESFORD -- The Ethan/Parkston girls and Lennox boys won team titles at Thursday’s Region 3A cross-country meet at The Bridges at Beresford Golf Course.

Ethan/Parkston placed first with 44 points, edging second-place teams Lennox and Vermillion by three points. The Lennox boys scored 41 points to earn the team title, finishing just ahead of Vermillion (46). 

Vermillion’s Taeli Barta was the girls individual medalist with a time of 19:19.34. Tea Area’s Jaycie Babb (19:28.04) and Lennox’s Alicia Ruud (19:38.60) placed second and third, respectively. Vermillion’s Callie Radigan (19:39.58) and Ethan/Parkston’s Lindsey Roth (19:44.23) rounded out the top-five. 

Beresford’s Andrew Atwood was the boys individual medalist in 16:30.24, outlasting Lennox’s Sam Swanson (16:34.93). Ethan/Parkston’s Evan Bartelt (16:45.41) and Beresford’s Cameron Wells (16:47.60) placed third and fourth, respectively. Elk Point-Jefferson’s Joe Cross (16:51.47) rounded out the top-five. 


Custer teams claim Region 5A titles

RAPID CITY -- The Custer cross-country teams captured titles at Thursday’s Region 5A meet at Hart Ranch Camping Resort. 

The Custer (22) boys edged Belle Fourche by seven points for the team title. The Custer girls took first with 28 points, while Red Cloud (38) placed second.

Belle Fourche’s Sawyer Clarkson (15:23.78) was the boys individual medalist in 15:23.78. Custer’s Miles Ellman (16:47.67) and Gage Grohs (16:54.34) finished second and third, respectively. Belle Fourche’s Aiden Voyles (17:18.36) and Hill City’s Luke Rupert (17:26.21) rounded out the top-five. 

On the girls side, Hill City’s Abby Cutler (18:45.85) was the individual medalist, while Custer’s Kadense Dooley (18:50.82) placed second. Custer’s Ramsey Karim (19:03.05) and Red Cloud’s Jade Ecoffey (19:14.73) finished third and fourth, respectively. Custer’s Evan Studt (19:28.48) finished in fifth place. 


Northwestern, Aberdeen Christian win Region 1B titles

WEBSTER -- The Northwestern boys and Aberdeen Christian girls won team titles at Thursday’s Region 1B cross-country meet at the Webster Golf Course.

Northwestern won the boys team title with 11 points, finishing 13 points ahead of second-place Aberdeen Christian. Frederick Area (27), Aberdeen Roncalli (54) and Estelline/Hendricks (56) rounded out the top-five.

On the girls side, Aberdeen Christian (16) edged Northwestern (22) for the region title. Frederick Area (23), Aberdeen Roncalli (31) and James Valley Christian (37) rounded out the top-five. 

Individually, James Valley Christian’s Daniel Ayoroa won the 5,000-meter run in 18-minutes and 10 seconds. Northwestern’s Lincoln Woodring (18:38) and Warner’s Dillon Browning (18:48) placed second and third, respectively. Northwestern teammates Justin Haven (18:57) and Nathan Melius (18:59) captured fourth and fifth, respectively. 

Northwestern’s Ella Boekelheide (20:56.79) earned the individual title. Frederick Area’s Morgan Sumption (20:57.91) was just behind in second place. Aberdeen Roncalli’s Paige Schmidt (21:08.84), Aberdeen Christian’s Rachel Beaner (21:34.51) and Grace Steger (21:45.67) rounded out the top-five. 


Aberdeen Christian, Miller teams capture Region 4B titles

GETTYSBURG -- The Aberdeen Christian girls and Miller boys teams earned team titles at Thursday’s Region 4B cross-country meet at the Gettysburg Country Club. 

Aberdeen Christian scored 16 points to earn the girls team title. Northwestern (22) and Frederick Area (23) finished second and third, respectively. Miller won the boys team title with 11 points, while Ipswich and Faulkton Area tied for second with 33 points. 

Northwestern’s Ella Boekelheide (20:56.79) edged Frederick Area’s Morgan Sumption (20:57.91) for individual medalist honors. Aberdeen Roncalli’s Paige Schmidt (21:08.84), Aberdeen Christian’s Rachel Beaner (21:34.51) and Aberdeen Christian’s Grace Steger (21:45.47) rounded out the top-five. 

On the boys side, Miller’s Pierce Baumberger took first in 16:51.44 to pace the Rustlers. Potter County’s Nicholas Schlachter (16:52.29) and Miller’s Alex Schumacher (16:52.90) placed second and third, respectively. Faulkton Area’s Hunter Niederbaumer (17:15.47) and Sully Buttes’ Griffin Petersen (17:42.55) rounded out the top-five.
