MOBRIDGE — Mack Saxon is a tough man to bring down.

The Mobridge-Pollock High School sophomore running back combines power, speed and some elusiveness for the Tigers. At 5-foot-10, 205-pounds, Saxon packs a punch at the running back spot for Mobridge-Pollock and bullies his way for tough yards.

“Physical, speed and a little shifty,” said Saxon, describing his running style.

On Sept. 6 against Miller/Highmore-Harrold, Saxon scored four total touchdowns, including three rushing scores to power the Tigers (2-1). Saxon scored on runs of 3, 50 and 35 yards.

On his 50-yard touchdown run, Saxon emerged from a pileup past the line of scrimmage and darted for the score. On his 35-yard touchdown run, Saxon again showed off his electric running style, spinning and juking defenders for the score.

For Mobridge-Pollock coach Donovon Flaherty it was an all-too-familiar sight, watching Saxon bulldoze his way for touchdowns.

"He runs mad at the ground and he just runs so physical," Flaherty said. "It’s just really awesome being able to coach a kid like that. I am just really fortunate as a coach to have a kid like that on my team.”

This season, Saxon has had three straight games with 100 or more rushing yards and has scored seven rushing touchdowns.

Against the Rustlers, Saxon also showed off his playmaking from the defensive side. With the game still hanging in the balance, Miller/Highmore-Harrold’s Derek Brueggeman, who accounted for five passing touchdowns, took off scrambling at midfield. Saxon chased down Brueggeman, stripped the ball from him and sprinted 50 yards for a touchdown.

“He kind of burned me a little bit,” Saxon said. “I was like ‘I am going to go get him.’ I came behind him, grabbed the ball and ran it for a touchdown.”

Saxon made the play from the defensive end position, which Flaherty said was a wrinkle the Tigers threw at the Rustlers.

“He’s just a gamer,” Flaherty said. “I thought that was something we could use a changeup and put him at a defensive end-type position and just tell him to go after the quarterback. He did a great job. It was just a great play and that’s honestly something he can do. He’s got that ability and we want to continue to find ways to allow that playmaking to come about.”

Saxon also helped step in Jackson Eisemann’s absence. The senior quarterback left the game with a leg injury, and Flaherty didn’t know the extent of the injury afterward.

Sophomore quarterback Shooter Frederick filled in for Eisemann, while a host of other Tigers also stepped up. Senior tight end Shane Henderson (6-foot-6), sophomore wide receiver Easton Eisemann, sophomore wide receiver Kale Knudson and sophomore wide receiver Tyler Schmeichel, among others, also shined for the Tigers.

“We had to step up a lot more,” Saxon said. “Because we got our second string in but (Frederick) played an amazing game, too.”

Saxon started last season as a freshman, but Flaherty said he will be called upon more this season for the Tigers.

“He maybe wasn’t the main guy, per say,” Flaherty said. “Because he wasn't ready for that role. But he’s got somebody who is able to step up. I think our O-line, too. There are other pieces that have to step up as well, especially if we are going to run the ball as much as we want to.”

The Tigers will play at Aberdeen Roncalli on Sept. 13.
