SIOUX FALLS — Trinity Bietz was a double-event winner one last time Friday.

The Scotland/Menno thrower captured the Class A girls shot put and discus championships at the South Dakota state track and field meet, capping off an illustrious throwing career in the process.

For Bietz, it was her third consecutive state championship in the shot put. But this one was in a different class. Bietz won the last two Class B shot put titles, and added a Class A title this year after the Scotland/Menno co-op was formed.

“It totally felt great,” Bietz said about claiming a Class A state championship. “Definitely that class jump I thought was going to be enormous. But just being here it didn't really feel that bad, and I knew that I could take it, so I did.”

Bietz unleashed a toss of 39-feet and 3.75 inches on her first attempt, but fouled on her next four attempts. She logged a throw of 37-10 on her final attempt.

But the first toss held up and Bietz’s next closest competitor, Kate Hayes of Elk Point-Jefferson, finished second at 37-1.25.

“I definitely didn’t throw what I wanted to throw,” Bietz said. “I wanted to beat my own school record in shot put, but to still get that championship is great.”

Bietz’s day started with an unexpected discus state championship. Bietz entered the event with the fourth best mark, but launched a throw of 128-2 on her first attempt. The toss put her in the lead and she heaved a throw of 134-8 on her fifth attempt to cement the state championship.

“I definitely didn't expect it,” Bietz said. “So it felt great. I was chasing my Scotland school record. I got it and so it’s always great to get a record and a state championship.”

It was also Bietz’s final time competing in the ring. Bietz, who is a four-sport athlete, will attend South Dakota State University next season and will major in animal science. She will not compete in college athletics.

But will have memories and state championships to remember from a memorable high school career.

“I think all the friendships you made and the support of the throwing family,” Bietz said about her favorite part of high school track and field. “If you throw well it’s not just your coaches congratulating you, it’s other throwers and other coaches and it’s just great to hear that.”
