HERRIMAN, Utah — The Team South Dakota 16U boys competed in a National Freestyle dual tournament that wrapped up last week.

Team South Dakota opened first day action with eventual 16U national boys dual champion, California. The South Dakota boys lost that dual, 56-23, despite giving up 15 points due to three open weight classes.

Their second match of the day they came up with a win beating Arizona, 44-36. The team wrestled five duals the first day, and three duals the second day. The boys wrestled each team tough despite always giving up 15 points because of open weight classes.

The second day team South Dakota was placed in the Red/Blue pool and lost to New Jersey (43-29), Colorado (46-27) and Nebraska (40-37).

The results put team South Dakota in 8th place in the Red/Blue pool.

This year's tournament consisted of 35 total teams from across the country. Going into the second day South Dakota had two undefeated wrestlers in Gage Lohr from Watertown and Luke Tonsager from Belle Fourche. At the end of the tournament, Lohr was able to remain undefeated in the tournament (8-0) and he was named to the all-tourney team. This tournament was another test for the South Dakota athletes who are preparing for the national tournament in Fargo, North Dakota, which takes place July 14-20.
