RAPID CITY — The Canton boys and the Pierre girls will be looking to add to record-breaking streaks as the state wrestling tournament begins Thursday in Rapid City.

The Canton boys will be looking for a record eighth-consecutive Class B state team title. The Pierre girls are aiming for a fourth consecutive team title and the Governors have won every team title since girls wrestling became a sanctioned sport. The Sturgis boys are heavy favorites to repeat as Class A state champions.

As the wrestlers and the wrestling community ready to write the newest historical chapter in state history here are some of the headlines to keep tabs on.

Eleven athletes still striving for perfection:

Tyler Woodring, Tea Area, 126, 38-0

Moses Gross, Huron 150, 21-0

Keenan Sheridan, Sioux Falls O’Gorman, 175, 46-0

Elijah Schunke, Brandon Valley, 215, 29-0

Micah Hach, Watertown, 285, 46-0

Apollo Willuweit, Winner, 106, 40-0

Lucas Lenz, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes, 165, 39-0

Teague Granum, Canton, 28-0, 190

Finley Evjen, Canton, 44-0, 120

Summer Guthmiller, Sioux Valley, 138

Bon Homme/Scotland Avon’s Peyton Hellmann, 41-0, 145.

Hach siblings looking to become first brother/sister combo to win state titles

For the past few seasons Watertown’s Micah Hach has reached the Class A 285 championship only to run into the buzz-saw that was Navarro Schunke. Hach is 46-0 this season and is the heavy favorite to win a state championship Saturday. Younger sister Eden Hach is 46-1 this season and the No. 1 seed at 235 in the girls competition.

O’Gorman’s Keenan Sheridan attempting to break Knights championship drought:

Sioux Falls O’Gorman senior Keenan Sheridan is having a spectacular senior season and is undefeated entering the state tournament. The last Sioux Falls O’Gorman wrestler to win a state title was Chuck Cinco during the 1989-90 season.

Lucas Lenz looking for first family state title:

A year ago Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes senior Lucas Lenz reached the Class B 165 championship and lost 7-2 to Wagner’s Jhett Breen. In 2023 his brother Carter Lenz reached the 145 final, losing to Canton’s Ayson Rice. Lenz is undefeated this season and beat the No. 2 seed in the 2025 165 state tournament bracket, Parkston’s Wyatt Anderson 11-4 in the Region 3B finals.

Peyton Hellmann looking for fifth consecutive state title:

Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon senior Peyton Hellmann has won a state title every year since girls wrestling became a sanctioned sport. Hellmann, the only four-time girls state champion in South Dakota history, will be looking for a fifth consecutive state title this weekend and is the No. 1 seed at 145.

Kellan Hurd and Moses Gross each looking for third state title:

Miller/Highmore-Harrold senior Kellan Hurd will be aiming for a third consecutive Class B state wrestling title this weekend. Hurd lost to Stanley County’s Chase Hanson in the 126 finals in 2022, beat Kimball/White Lake Platte-Geddes’ Kasen Konstanz 6-3 in the 132 finals in 2023 and beat Webster Area’s Haeden Jorgensen, 2-1 in the 2024 138 finals. Hurd is the No. 2 seed in the 144 bracket at the 2025 state tournament.

In 2022 Moses Gross beat Brandon Valley’s Trason Oehme 4-2 in the state finals. A year later Oehme beat Gross 6-3 in the state championship match. Gross beat Sturgis’ Joseph Nadig in the 150 finals in 2024 and is the top seed in the 150 bracket for the 2025 state tournament.

Watertown’s Gage Lohr returns from injury to defend state championship:

Watertown sophomore Gage Lohr’s streak of consecutive state titles looked in jeopardy several weeks ago. Lohr was injured during a match with Rapid City Stevens athlete Aidan Callahan and lost by injury default. It was thought that Lohr, a two-time state champion, was lost for the season to injury but he showed up and won the Region 1A title with a tech fall (23-3) over West Central’s Langdon Klinkhammer. At the 2024 state tournament Brandon Valley’s Navarro Schunke became the first South Dakota athlete to win five Class A state wrestling titles. Lohr is the No. 2 seed (138) in the 2025 Class A state tournament behind Callahan.
