PIERRE — Sturgis captured its third consecutive Class A state dual wrestling championship on Friday.

The Scoopers defeated Rapid City Central (56-13), Watertown (43-23) and Aberdeen Central (58-7) en route to the state championship. 

“It was a good day, and the kids competed hard,” Sturgis coach Mike Abell said. “Our Watertown matchup, they were the only team in the dual tournament that we have not wrestled. So that was a little bit of a question mark going in. But our kids competed hard and we knew that momentum would be big in that dual and they were going to steal a couple of matches and we needed some momentum stoppers in there to kind of kill that, and get it back on our side.” 

In the championship dual against Aberdeen Central, Parker Graveman (132 pounds), Mason Hagen (138), Josiah Drummer (144), Jace Thurman (150), Benjamin Nadig (157), Gavin Werlinger (175), Kelson Dirk (190), Zhoel Irion (215), Tyce Uherka (285), Sullivan Sigman (106), Tyce Dunn (113) and Tyler Baldwin (120) all earned wins in the convincing victory. 

“I think they all competed well,” Abell said. “Where we needed to get wins we got wins, they got wins.” 

Up next, the Scoopers will turn their attention to the region meet and state tournament on Feb. 26-28 in Sioux Falls. 

“It’s back to the drawing board and it’s hard because you want to celebrate it,” Abell said. “But you act like it didn’t happen. We get back to work in the wrestling room and we attack the region tournament.”
