Sturgis senior Ty Petrocco outduels quality field to win Sturgis cross-country meet

FORT MEADE — In a boys race that featured 105 runners, Sturgis’ Ty Petrocco was first to hit the finish line, winning Thursday’s Sturgis Invitational at Fort Meade Course. 

Petrocco covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:10 to finish in front of Thunder Basin, Wyoming’s Patrick Hardesty (16:12) and Natrona County, Wyoming’s Kalel Brubaker (16:17). Sheridan, Wyoming’s Shaun Gonda (16:29) and Kelly Walsh, Wyoming’s Micah Colling (16:29) rounded out the top-five individuals. 


Natrona County Wyoming’s Ally Wheeler won the girls race in 18:42, ahead of Spearfish’s Peyton VanDeest (19:10) and Kelly Walsh, Wyoming’s Lexi Longhurst (19:36). Thunder Basin, Wyoming’s Carlee Roth (19:51) and Sheridan, Wyoming’s Kayley Alicke (20:12) rounded out the top-five finishers.

The Sturgis boys were the top South Dakota team finishing fifth with 120 points, ahead of seventh place Custer (214) and eighth place Spearfish (215). 

The Sturgis girls were the top South Dakota team finishing third with 92 points, ahead of sixth place Spearfish (135) and seventh place Douglas (203).
