WINNER — Winner High School standout Shawn Hammerbeck has verbally committed to play football at the University of Nebraska.

Hammerbeck announced his intentions to be a Cornhusker on Wednesday. Hammerbeck picked Nebraska over scholarship offers from Minnesota, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan State and Oregon State. FCS powerhouse North Dakota State University and in-state school South Dakota also offered Hammerbeck.

Hammerbeck, a 6-foot-7, 250-pounder, is being recruited as an offensive tackle by the Cornhuskers.

Hammerbeck took official visits to Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Texas Tech in June. An all-state defensive lineman, Hammerbeck led the Warriors in tackles and sacks this season. On the basketball court, Hammerbeck averaged 15.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. He recently won the Class A state championship in the discus, while he also placed fifth in the javelin and also qualified in the shot put.
