SIOUX FALLS — The Class AA girls basketball tournament is Thursday-Saturday at the Sanford Pentagon. 

The contest features a mix of teams scattered throughout the state, including four Sioux Falls metro teams, three Eastern South Dakota Conference teams and two West River teams. 

Here’s a look at all eight teams in the field: 


2024 Class AA Girls Basketball Tournament Capsules 

O’Gorman 

Record: 21-0 

Coach: Kent Kolsrud 

Key players: Mahli Abdouch (16.3 ppg, 3.5 apg, 3.4 rpg, 3.4 spg), Lucy Moore (8.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 2.4 apg), Sydney Terveen (7.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2 apg), Julia Eggert (8.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg), Padyn Peterson (4.8 ppg), Ruby Moore (5.1 pp, 2.6 rpg).  

Notes: No. 1 O’Gorman will play No. 8 Rapid City Stevens at noon CT in their tourney opener. The Knights defeated the Raiders earlier this season, 47-35. … Abdouch, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, will play college basketball at South Dakota State University. An all-state guard, Abdouch has scored more than 1,000 career points in her career. … Lucy Moore, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, will play college basketball at Northern State University, where her father, Keith, was a standout for the Wolves. … Lucy’s sister Ruby, a 5-foot-8 freshman guard, has already received scholarship offers from SDSU and USD. … The Knights have qualified for 15 straight state tournaments, and their last championship came in 2022. 


Rapid City Stevens

Record: 13-8 

Coach: Adam Dannenbring  

Key players: Taaliyah Porter (19.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.3 apg, 2.1 spg), Isabell Higgins (6.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg), Finley Love (6.6 ppg, 1.8 rpg), Brittany Jones (5.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg).

Notes: No. 8 Rapid City Stevens will play No. 1 O’Gorman at noon CT in their tourney opener. The Raiders lost to the Knights this season, 47-35. … Taaliyah Porter, 5-foot-8 junior guard, scored her 1,000th career point earlier this season, the fourth girls player in program history to reach the milestone. An all-stater, Porter has a scholarship offer from Black Hills State University. … The Raiders have qualified for 11 straight state tournaments, including runner-up finishes in 2021 and ‘22. 


Sioux Falls Jefferson

Record: 16-5 

Coach: Shaunteva Pruett 

Key players: Brinley Altenburg (17.6 ppg, 3 rpg), Jaidyn Dunn (12.1 ppg, 7.1 rpg), Aliyah McGovern (7.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg).  

Notes: No. 4 Jefferson will play No. 5 Pierre at 1:45 p.m. CT in their tourney opener. The Cavaliers lost to Pierre earlier this season, 51-47. … Jaidyn Dunn, a 6-foot-1 senior forward, will play college basketball at South Dakota State University. She was an all-state selection last season. … Brinley Altenburg, a 5-foot-10 freshman guard, has received scholarship offers from South Dakota State, South Dakota and Creighton. … Aliyah McGovern, a 5-foot-6 senior guard, will play college basketball at Dakota Wesleyan University. … The Cavaliers are playing in their third straight state tourney.

Pierre 

Record: 15-6 

Coach: Kirk Beebout 

Key players: Reese Terwilliger (14.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2 spg), Lennix Dupris (14.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4 spg, 3 apg), Ryann Barry (13.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4 apg, 3.2 spg).

Notes: No. 5 Pierre will play No. 4 Jefferson at 1:45 p.m. CT in their tourney opener. The Governors defeated Jefferson earlier this season, 51-47. … Terwilliger, a 5-foot-11 senior forward, will play college basketball at South Dakota School of Mines next season. … Barry, a 5-foot-8 senior, will play college basketball at Chadron State College. … Dupris, a 5-foot-6 junior guard, has hit 46 3-pointers this season. Dupris has a school program record 85 steals this season. … Pierre placed second at last season’s state tourney, its first appearance since 2017. 


Mitchell 

Record: 19-2  

Coach: Dave Brooks  

Key players: Sawyer Stoebner (15.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 4.3 apg), Addie Siemsen (12.3 ppg, 3 rpg), Lauren VanOverschelde (9.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg), Allison Meyerink (6.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg).  

Notes: No. 2 Mitchell will play No. 7 Harrisburg at 6 p.m. CT in their tourney opener. Mitchell edged Harrisburg, 46-44, earlier this season in Harrisburg. … A 5-foot-9 senior forward, Sawyer Stoebner will play college basketball at Black Hills State University. The all-stater has scored more than 1,000 career points. … The Kernels are playing in their fourth state tournament since 2019, including a sixth-place finish last season. 


Harrisburg

Record: 13-8

Coach: Nick Mayer 

Key players: Abby Flanagan (12.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg), Sadie Mehrman (10.4 ppg, 4 rpg, 2.7 apg), Kinley Lawrenson (10 ppg, 4.1 rpg), Jaylee Hofer (9.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg).

Notes: No. 7 Harrisburg will play No. 2 Mitchell at 6 p.m. CT in their tourney opener. Harrisburg dropped a 46-44 decision against Mitchell earlier this season. … Abby Flanagan will play soccer at the University of Sioux Falls. … The Tigers have qualified for 12 straight state tournaments, including last season’s fourth-place finish. 


Brandon Valley 

Record: 17-4 

Coach: Mike Zerr  

Key players: Alyvia Padgett (13.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg), Ava Kellenberger (8.5 ppg, 3.7 rpg), Madison Geiver (7.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg), Kennedi Deckert (7 ppg), Gracie Salter (5.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg).  

Notes: No. 3 Brandon Valley will play No. 6 Spearfish at 7:45 p.m. CT in their tourney opener. The Lynx defeated the Spartans, 49-37, earlier this season. … A 5-foot-6 senior guard, Deckert will play college basketball at Northern State University. … Padgett, a 5-foot-7 sophomore guard, has received interest from several Summit League schools. … Brandon Valley has qualified for seven state tournaments since 2017. 


Spearfish 

Record: 15-6 

Coach: Dakota Johnson   

Key players: Jozie Dana (10.5 ppg, 2.7 rpg), Mya Kochuten (10.5 ppg), Kate Scharf (8.3 ppg), Maria Bouman (6.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg). 

Notes: No. 6 Spearfish will play No. 3 Brandon Valley at 7:45 p.m. CT in their tourney opener. The Spartans lost to the Lynx, 49-37, earlier this season. … Spearfish is playing in its first state tournament since 2014. … Spearfish head coach Dakota Johnson and assistant coaches Remi Wientjes and Jaime Bentley are former Black Hills State University women’s basketball players.
