Aug. 26 Football Roundup - Howard outlasts Canistota in Cornbelt Conference thriller

Howard 21, Canistota 20

CANISTOTA — Class 9AA No. 1 Howard edged Class 9A No. 1 Canistota in a Cornbelt Conference thriller on Friday. 

Howard’s Karsyn Feldhaus fourth-quarter touchdown and ensuing PAT kick gave Howard a 21-20 lead with 14 seconds left. The Tigers recorded a game-clinching sack on the ensuing drive to secure the win. 

Howard’s Taiden Hoyer finished with 147 rushing yards on 11 carries and scored one touchdown. Feldhaus added 105 rushing yards on 20 carries and his touchdown. Hoyer logged 34 passing yards, including a 25-yard touchdown reception to Luke Koepsell. Kaden Hofer recorded nine tackles and the game-sealing sack, while Hoyer added an interception on defense.

Canistota’s Tage Ortman threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Noah Kleinsasser hauled in all three touchdown receptions and logged 119 receiving yards on five receptions. Cayden Scott rushed for 23 yards. Levi Schroeder posted eight tackles and one interception.  


 

Bon Homme 46, Kimball/White Lake 0

TYNDALL — Bon Homme piled up 275 total yards en route to a shutout win over Kimball/White Lake on Friday. 

Bon Homme’s Riley Rothschadl finished with 100 passing yards and three touchdown passes, while he added 116 rushing yards and another score. Jackson Caba added 33 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. Logan Winckler hauled in 98 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions. Chapin Cooper posted six tackles, while Landon Bares added an interception. 

KWL’s Park Sinclair finished with 43 passing yards and Iden Myers rushed for 41 yards. Dayn Goodman added 43 receiving yards. Nathan Mohnen had five tackles.

Kadoka Area 40, Harding County/Bison 22

KADOKA — Kadoka Area outscored Class 9A No. 3 Harding County/Bison 22-0 in the second half to secure a high school win on Friday. 

The Kougars racked up 429 total yards, including 364 rushing yards on 56 carries. Gus Stout recorded 139 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Garrett Hermann posted 102 rushing yards. Tyus Williams logged 67 rushing yards, while Reece Orhtman posted 50 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Hermann threw for 65 yards and one touchdown reception to Stout. Orhtman posted nine tackles on defense. 

Harding County/Bison’s Kelby Hett threw for 119 yards, while Rylee Veal rushed for 105 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown. Braden Routier scored two rushing touchdowns. Gage Gilbert posted 81 receiving yards on six receptions. Gilbert added 11 tackles on defense. 


Wall 49, Philip 14

PHILIP — Class 9AA No. 2 Wall used a 21-0 second quarter to put away Philip in a Friday high school football action. 

The Eagles finished with 410 total yards, including 291 rushing yards on 32 carries. Burk Blasius paced the offense with 139 rushing yards on 12 carries and scored a rushing touchdown. Blasius added 119 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Cedar Amiotte added 120 rushing yards on 11 carries and scored three touchdowns. Brodi Sundall added a rushing touchdown, while Blair Blasius and Rylan McDonnell hauled in touchdown receptions. Burk Blasius had a team-high six tackles and McDonnell had an interception. 

Philip finished with 164 total yards, including 151 yards on the ground. Layton Terkildsen rushed for 80 yards, while Ryker Peterson scored a rushing touchdown and had 77 yards on the ground. Lane Kuchenbecker scored a rushing touchdown and threw for 13 yards. 


Mount Vernon/Plankinton 30, Miller/Highmore-Harrold 13

MILLER — Mount Vernon/Plankinton recorded 251 total yards to pick up a Friday high school football win over Miller/Highmore-Harrold. 

The Titans rushed for 233 yards and received rushing touchdowns from three different players. Drew Gerlach, Christopher Mayer and Reed Rus all scored rushing touchdowns. Gerlach posted a team-high 83 rushing yards on 14 carries. Rus added 18 passing yards and threw a touchdown reception to Jordan Stoltz. Rylan Bush logged seven tackles, while Mayer and Stoltz both intercepted passes on defense. 

For Miller/Highmore-Harrold, Trey Knox passed for 214 yards and a touchdown. Tate Hoffman rushed for 65 yards and hauled in 104 receiving yards. Hoffman scored a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown. Mason Knox logged 10 tackles. 


Lyman 40, New Underwood 0

NEW UNDERWOOD — Lyman racked up 390 total yards en route to a shutout win over New Underwood in Friday high school football action. 

Teagan Gourneau powered Lyman with 243 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Cooper Long hauled in six receptions for 151 yards and caught two touchdown passes. Tance Wagner hauled in a touchdown reception and rushed for two touchdowns. He added 68 rushing yards and 42 receiving yards. Kellen Griffith scored a 61-yard touchdown run. Long added an interception on defense. 

New Underwood’s Kale Crowser rushed for 16 yards. 

Hamlin 52, Dell Rapids St. Mary 12

HAYTI — Class 9AA No. 4 Hamlin topped Class 9B No. 1 Dell Rapids St. Mary in a high school football action on Friday. The Chargers piled up 429 total yards, including 307 rushing yards on 26 carries. 

Luke Fraser powered the Chargers with 219 rushing yards on nine carries and scored three touchdowns. Tyson Stevenson added 122 passing yards and threw three touchdown passes. Zac VanMeeteren hauled in two touchdown receptions, while Fraser added a touchdown reception. Jackson Wadsworth rushed for a touchdown. Jameson Nebel had 5.5 tackles and two sacks. 

DRSM’s C.J. Smith threw for 113 yards and a touchdown. Owen Vargas added a passing touchdown, while Trimmier Hanson had 46 rushing yards. Camden Gilbert and Conner Hanson had touchdown receptions, while Nic Gasper had 83 receiving yards. Hanson and Vargas posted four tackles apiece.


Winner 52, Wagner 12

WINNER — Class 11B No. 1 Winner erupted for 481 yards to power a high school football win over Wagner. 

The Warriors rushed for 442 yards on 37 carries. Riley Orel paced the rushing attack with 162 rushing yards on four carries and scored two touchdowns. Aiden Barfuss logged 96 rushing yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns. Gus Bartels posted 53 rushing yards, while Karson Keiser added 52 rushing yards and one score. Blake Volmer threw for 39 yards and had a touchdown reception to Ethan Bartels. Jack Kruger logged 4.5 tackles.

Wagner’s Jhett Breen rushed for 133 yards on 28 carries and scored a touchdown. Daniel Soukup logged 75 passing yards and threw a touchdown pass to Glenn Cournoyer, who had 62 receiving yards. Soukup finished with six tackles on defense. 


De Smet 36, Stanley County 7

DE SMET — Britt Carlson threw for 109 passing yards and three touchdowns to lift Class 9B No. 5 De Smet to a high school football win over Stanley County.

Carlson added 30 rushing yards, while he connected with Kadyn Fast for two touchdown receptions. Fast added 30 rushing yards and scored on a punt return. Tommy Aughenbaugh hauled in a touchdown reception. Trace Van Regenmorter added 62 rushing yards and scored a rushing touchdown. Dylan Zell logged 57 rushing yards. Van Regenmorter, Gannon Gruenhagen and Noah Harrison posted six tackles apiece. 

Stanley County stats were not reported.


Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan 30, Flandreau 6

FLANDREAU — Class 11B No. 2 Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan pulled away from Flandreau for a Friday high school football win. 

The Seahawks racked up 267 total yards, with Riley Endres powering the offensive attack. Endres finished with 226 total yards and four total touchdowns, including 125 rushing yards and three rushing scores. Endres connected with Sam Hofer (142 receiving yards) for a touchdown reception. Sutton Arend added 101 receiving yards and Aguer VanSickle hauled in a touchdown reception. 

Flandreau’s Paul Parsley posted 74 passing yards. Ethan Hoffman hauled in 47 receiving yards and rushed for 37 yards. Kolby Peters added a rushing touchdown. Hoffman also had 13 tackles on defense. 


Avon 54, Burke 6

AVON — Class 9B No. 3 Avon piled up 438 total yards to pick up a Friday high school football win over Burke. 

The Pirates rushed for 423 yards on 46 carries. Jaden Stahl paced the rushing attack with 154 yards on 14 carries and scored a touchdown. Cade Faulkner added 104 rushing yards on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns. Paxton Bierema logged 56 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Tjeerdsma added 43 rushing yards and a score. Bierma threw for 15 yards and Faulkner added 15 receiving yards. Kley Heumiller posted six tackles and three sacks. Landon Mudder intercepted a pass and had four tackles. 

Burke’s Reed Benter threw for 26 yards, while Sawyer Tietgen posted 57 rushing yards. Ira Burroughs scored Burke’s lone touchdown on a kickoff return for a score. 


Herreid/Selby Area 30, Timber Lake 14

TIMBER LAKE — Brenden Begeman powered Class 9B No. 2 Herreid/Selby Area to a Friday high school football win over Timber Lake. Begeman scored four touchdown runs for the Wolverines, who outscored Timber Lake 22-14 in the final three quarters. 

Timber Lake’s Cole Ducheneaux threw touchdown passes to Gabe Keller and Jayden Miller. 

 

Woonsocket-Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central 14, Jim River 0

SCOTLAND — Woonsocket-Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central pitched a shutout against Jim River in Friday high school football action. 

The Blackhawks recorded 280 total yards and rushed for 170 yards on 50 carries. Holden Havlik finished with 110 passing yards, 67 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Brady Larson added 56 rushing yards and Hayden Beigh logged 49 receiving yards. Toby Kneen posted 7.5 tackles.

Jim River’s Ajay Herrboldt finished with 41 rushing yards. Kadeyn Ulmer added four passing yards and intercepted a pass on defense.

 

Hitchcock-Tulare 50, Faulkton Area 14

FAULKTON — Class 9B No. 4 Hitchcock-Tulare racked up 346 total yards and picked up a Friday high school football win over Faulkton Area. 

Erik Salmen led the Patriots with 122 rushing yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns. Carter Binger threw for 208 yards and tossed three touchdown passes. Landon Puffer hauled in six catches for 141 yards and three touchdown receptions. Puffer added a 79-yard kickoff return for a score. Riley Fliehe had a rushing touchdown. Defensively, Erik Salmen had 10 tackles and T.J. Salmen added seven tackles and two sacks. 

Faulkton Area’s Roman DiMaria hauled in a touchdown reception from Layne Cottone, while DiMaria scored on a 90-yard kickoff return. The Trojans racked up 186 passing yards. 


Tea Area 45, Huron 6

TEA — Class 11AA No. 2 Tea Area scored 45 points in the first half to cruise to a high school football win over Huron on Friday.

Maddix Slykhuis led Tea Area with 66 yards rushing and one touchdown while also passing for a touchdown. Blake Thompson passed for 53 yards and had one receiving touchdown. Parker Mulder had 53 yards receiving, while Chase Van Tol and Keegan DeYoung each had rushing touchdowns. Jackson Smythe led the defense with 10 tackles.

For Huron, Mason Davis passed for 87 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 13 yards. Gavin Moeding had 40 yards receiving, while C.J. Gainey had a receiving touchdown. Cashton Caudell logged nine tackles defensively.


Jones County 41, Sunshine Bible Academy 0

MILLER — Jones County picked up a shutout victory over Sunshine Bible Academy in a high school football game on Friday.

Matthew Birkeland rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns while also adding 51 yards receiving and one score. Birkeland also tallied nine tackles on defense. Kaden Kinsley passed for 150 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 86 yards and another score. Cooper Fedderson tallied 99 yards receiving and one touchdown. Dylan Fuoss added eight tackles and three sacks defensively.

For SBA, Nolan Triebwasser passed for 81 yards and recorded 15 tackles defensively. Troy Paul and Daniel Gerbracht added 10 and nine tackles, respectively.


Sioux Valley 35, Sisseton 12

VOLGA — Class 11B No. 4 Sioux Valley scored 35 first half points and cruised to a high school football win over Sisseton on Friday.

Boden Schiller led Sioux Valley with 88 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while Lane Liebsch added 83 yards rushing and one touchdown. Jace Christensen passed for 33 yards and added a rushing touchdown. Donovan Rose also had one touchdown reception.

For Sisseton, Ethan DeSpeigler passed for 41 yards and had a rushing touchdown. Sam Bullock rushed for 80 yards and one touchdown.


Tri-Valley 21, Parker 0

COLTON — Tri-Valley pulled away from Parker for a high school football win on Friday.

Carter Sorenson led Tri-Valley with 64 yards rushing. Eli McFarland and Hayden Hastings each had one rushing touchdown. Brendan Newman added a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Parker’s Logan Bridges threw for 75 yards, while Ethan Kasten had 26 yards receiving.


Aberdeen Roncalli 14, Deuel 7

CLEAR LAKE — Aberdeen Roncalli held off Deuel for a Northeast Conference football win on Friday.

Maddox May led Aberdeen Roncalli with 72 yards rushing and one touchdown, while Jackson Isakson added 57 yards rushing and 49 yards passing. Abe Kretchman added a rushing touchdown. Brendan Livermont had four tackles. 

For Deuel, Owen Quail led with 41 rushing yards, while Trey Maaland added 37 yards rushing and one touchdown. Ty Lovre logged 10 tackles, while Owen Quail intercepted a pass on defense. 


Elkton-Lake Benton 26, Estelline/Hendricks 7

ELKTON — Elkton-Lake Benton picked up a high school football win over Estelline/Hendricks on Friday.

Riddick Westley led Elkton-Lake Benton with 188 yards rushing and one touchdown. Ryan Krog rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns, while passing for 77 yards and one touchdown. Tanner Drietz tallied 54 receiving yards and one touchdown. Blake DeVries recorded 10.5 tackles and one interception on defense, while Krog and Tanner Stein added eight and seven tackles, respectively.

Estelline/Hendricks was led by Joseph McAninch with 45 yards rushing. Mattix Hausman threw for 17 yards and one touchdown. Wyat James had one touchdown reception.

 

Beresford 41, Milbank 6

BERESFORD — Beresford piled up 323 total yards en route to a Friday high school football win over Milbank. Beresford finished with 287 yards on the ground. 

Beresford’s Tate VanOtterloo rushed for 103 yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns. VanOtterloo added 36 passing yards and threw a passing touchdown. 

Peyton Fridrich rushed for 101 yards on 14 carries and scored a rushing touchdown. Jack Stenen added a rushing score. Jake Goblirsch finished with a receiving touchdown. Jaxson Tadlock had four tackles. 

Milbank’s Garrett Mertens logged 113 passing yards and a passing touchdown. Jayden Johnson rushed for 42 yards and caught an 80-yard touchdown reception. Aidan Foell recorded seven tackles and a sack on defense.


Chester Area 58, Centerville 52

CENTERVILLE — Chester Area outlasted Centerville in a high scoring high school football game on Friday.

Chester Area’s Layke Wold threw for 449 yards and seven touchdowns. Jovi Wolf had 11 catches for 328 yards and six touchdowns. Garret Hansen had one rushing touchdown and Max McGreevy had one receiving touchdown. Clay Hansen tallied 11.5 tackles and McGreevy added 9.5 tackles defensively.

Centerville’s Cole Edberg passed for 304 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 116 yards and one touchdown. Lane Johnson tallied 102 rushing yards and one touchdown. Austin Bohlman led with 99 yards receiving and two touchdowns, while Covin Wattier added 56 yards receiving and one touchdown. Edberg added eight tackles on defense, while Johnson and James Buckneberg tallied seven tackles apiece.


Ipswich 58, Langford Area 8

LANGFORD — Ipswich raced past Langford Area for a high school football win on Friday.

Ipswich’s Ian Beyers passed for 183 yards, while Tyler Hettich rushed for 133 yards. Trevor Heinz added 98 yards receiving. Hettich also recorded 10 tackles on defense, while Chet Peterson and Carter Geditz tallied seven and five tackles, respectively.

Langford Area stats were not reported.  


Alcester-Hudson 12, Corsica-Stickney 6

CORSICA — Jose Lopez fourth-quarter touchdown with 4:32 left lifted Alcester-Hudson to a Friday high school football victory over Corsica-Stickney. 

Alcester-Hudson’s Mateo Kleinhans rushed for 117 yards on 12 carries and scored a touchdown. Lopez added 68 rushing yards on 12 carries. Kleinhans and Aiden Cole both threw for 11 yards. Owen Bovill hauled in 11 receiving yards. Evan Brown racked up 8.5 tackles and Tyler Almlie added an interception. 

Corsica-Stickney’s Waylon Bolle rushed for 89 yards on 22 carries and scored a touchdown. Shad Bosma threw for 66 yards, while Carter Wright hauled in 58 receiving yards. Bolle posted 7.5 tackles, while Bosma and Caden Baumiller had interceptions.
