Brandon Valley’s Julian Watson sets 400-meter state record at Pierre American Legion Relays

PIERRE — Brandon Valley’s Julian Watson set an all-time South Dakota record at Friday’s Pierre American Legion Relays.

Watson claimed the 400-meter dash in :47.46 seconds, breaking Freeman’s Brennan Schmidt previous record of :47.54 seconds in 2015. Watson also won the 200-meter dash (:21.77) and placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (:10.93). 


As a team, Brandon Valley racked up 110 points to earn the boys team title. Brandon Valley’s Jeremiah Donahoe was the other individual winner for the Lynx, earning a first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (:40.34). 

Sioux Falls Washington’s Kael Miedema was a double winner in the discus (161-0) and shot put (56-3).

On the girls side, Rapid City Stevens amassed 125 points to earn the team title. Brandon Valley (111) and Century, North Dakota (103) placed second and third, respectively. 

Claire Fierro paced the victory with wins in the 100-meter hurdles (:15.35) and 300-meter hurdles (:49.01). 

In the 3,200-meter run, Stevens’ Brionna Holso (11:26.30) outlasted Custer’s Ramsey Karim (11:26.98) for the individual title. 

Stevens also won the 800-meter relay (1:46.53) and 3,200-meter relay (9:45.80). 

Brandon Valley’s Meghan Walker claimed the 100-meter dash (:12.34) and 200-meter dash (:25.92). 

Custer’s Kellyn Kortemeyer earned first-place finishes in the shot put (44-4.5) and discus (146-8). 

Rapid City Central’s Matayah Yellow Mule was a double winner in the long jump (17-6) and triple jump (38-7).
