Games to watch at 2026 boys Hanson Classic

MITCHELL — The 44th annual boys basketball Hanson Classic is Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Corn Palace. 

The eight-game event features 11 teams either ranked or receiving votes in the latest South Dakota Prep Media Basketball Poll. The classic starts at 11 a.m. with Hanson vs. White River and concludes at 8 p.m. with West Central vs. Clark/Willow Lake.

The classic will be available to stream online at www.beavers.liveticket.tv. The cost is $24.99 for all day and it includes all eight games at the Corn Palace. The purchase is for live stream only. No playback is available. 

Here are the games to watch this year’s Hanson Classic:


Lyman vs. Parkston 

Lyman, fresh off the Jones County Invitational tourney title, will play Class B No. 10 Parkston at 2 p.m. 

Parkston (9-2) is undefeated against Class B foes this season, with its two losses against Class teams Tri-Valley and Parker-Marion. The Trojans are coming off wins over Class A teams Platte-Geddes (62-50) and Wagner (62-31). The Raiders are powered by all-state guard Brycen Bruening, who totaled 18 points and nine rebounds in the win over Wagner. The Trojans are currently ranked No. 2 in the Class B seed points standings (45.800), just ahead of De Smet (45.600). 

The Raiders (8-3) won the 58th annual Jones County Invitational on Jan. 17, holding off Stanley County 52-47 in overtime for the win. Lyman’s five-game winning streak was snapped on Jan. 20, a 67-55 loss against Winner. Lyman’s other losses were against Sully Buttes (67-61) and Freeman (75-57). 

Lyman features a big lineup, with Cole Kieffer (6-4), Dawsen Volmer (6-4), Chace Seaboy (6-4) and Josiah Vaad (6-3) playing significant minutes. Guard MJ Diehm is a dynamic scoring guard for the Raiders. 


Freeman vs. Wessington Springs 

At 3:30 p.m., No. 5 Wessington Springs plays No. 7 Freeman in a top-10 Class B matchup. 

Wessington Springs (9-3) is coming off a 281 Conference tourney runner-up finish on Jan. 22, a 51-47 loss vs. Sanborn Central/Woonsocket. 

The Spartans are powered by all-staters Colby Flowers, a 6-foot-5 forward, and Parker Graff, a high-scoring guard. 

Flowers, who is also an all-state football player, will play college football at Division II Northern State University. Graff will play college basketball at NAIA Dakota Wesleyan University. 

The Spartans are currently No. 13 in the Class B seed points standings, with 43.727 points. Wessington Springs’ two losses are against Class A No. 3 Clark/Willow Lake (72-43) and Class B No. 3 De Smet (71-53). 

Freeman (9-2) is riding a seven-game winning streak, including a 59-57 win over formidable foe Bridgewater-Emery on Jan. 8. 

Freeman’s two losses were against Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley (73-64 OT) and Class A Pine Ridge (79-66). The Flyers featured a balanced-scoring attack, with Luke Peters (16 points), Tayden Kerrigan (15 points) and David Walter (13 points) scoring in double figures in a 77-42 win over Centerville on Jan. 20. Walter, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, was an all-stater last season as a freshman. 


Hamlin vs. Viborg-Hurley 

The 5 p.m. matchup features a top-10 cross-class matchup, with Class A No. 6 Hamlin playing Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley.

After dropping a 55-50 decision against Groton Area in the season opener, Hamlin (8-1) has rattled off eight straight victories. In the winning streak, the Chargers knocked off Class B No. 3 Castlewood (53-37) and Class B No. 2 De Smet (80-63). Hamlin also defeated formidable Class A foes Flandreau (62-47) and Sioux Valley (57-54). 

Hamlin features a balanced offensive attack, with Boden Stevenson (29 points), Jackson Wadsworth (25 points) and Jack Stormo (19 points) pacing the Chargers in their win over De Smet on Jan. 19. 

The Chargers are currently No. 3 in the Class A seed points standings, with 45.625 points. 

Viborg-Hurley (11-0) is coming off a 52-51 win over Baltic on Jan. 22. The Cougars have played a host of top-tier Class A and Class B teams this season. 

Viborg-Hurley has picked up four wins over teams either ranked or receiving votes in the latest South Dakota Prep Media Basketball Poll, including Freeman, Bridgewater-Emery, Pine Ridge and Wall. The Cougars are led by all-stater Brady Schroedemeier, a future South Dakota State University football player. Braydyn Morrison, Brenner Gerdes, Jake Austin, Nolan Kolthoff and Walker Warwick are also key contributors. 

The Cougars are currently No. 1 in the Class B seed points standings, with 47.300 points. Parkston is the next closest with 45.800 points. 


Lennox vs. St. Thomas More 

At 6:30 p.m., No. 4 St. Thomas More plays No. 9 Lennox in a top-10 Class A matchup. 

The Cavaliers (8-2) are coming off a 65-36 win over Lead-Deadwood on Jan. 20, one game after dropping a 46-42 decision against No. 1 West Central on Jan. 16. 

STM’s other defeat was a 74-70 loss against Kearney, Nebraska, on Dec. 20. The Cavaliers are paced by Ashton Paulsen, Max Speed, Broeden Sales, Wyatt Gylten and Baron Slusarski. St. Thomas More is currently No. 11 in the Class A seed points, tied with Wagner with 43.000 points. 

Lennox (5-4) is coming off a 45-33 loss vs. Class A No. 1 West Central on Jan. 22. Lennox’s other three losses were against No. 2 Sioux Falls Christian (64-38), No. 7 Groton Area (57-48) and Jonesboro, Georgia (60-33). 

The Orioles earned quality wins over Class A teams Madison (67-44) and No. 10 Vermillion (60-58). Lennox is led by Aiden Hanssen, Tate Gerdes, Teegan Musser, Cole Spieler and Drake Mikkelsen.

The Orioles are currently No. 14 in the Class A seed points standings, with 42.500 points. 


West Central vs. Clark/Willow Lake 

At 8 p.m., a top-three Class A boys basketball matchup caps off the Hanson Classic. 

Class A No. 1 West Central (12-0) will play Class A No. 3 Clark/Willow Lake (11-0) in the Hanson Classic nightcap. 

The matchup continues a daunting schedule for both teams. The Trojans have defeated quality Class A teams Vermillion (85-75), Groton Area (69-42), Pine Ridge (87-42), Sioux Falls Christian (64-55), Dakota Valley (55-41), St. Thomas More (46-42), Baltic (37-31) and Lennox (45-33). 

West Central is powered by all-staters Connor Mebius and Will Kuhl, a 6-foot-10 center headed to play college basketball at Division II Northern State University. The Trojans are also led by Boche Knight, Hayden Heier, Kolte Garry, Tanner Wagner and Bubba Kono. 

The Trojans are currently No. 2 in the Class A seed points (46.455), behind Clark/Willow Lake (47.000). 

CWL is coming off a 64-28 win over Aberdeen Roncalli on Jan. 22. The Cyclones have defeated quality teams Sioux Valley (67-50), Wessington Springs (72-43), Vermillion (59-49), Groton Area (56-39), Castlewood (47-36), De Smet (73-42) and Flandreau (48-38). 

The Cyclones are powered by Emmerson Larson, Chris Bevers, Bo Begeman and Sullivan Felberg. A 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, Felberg was an all-state selection last season as a freshman.
