CORSICA — Corsica-Stickney controlled the line of scrimmage and controlled Freeman/Freeman Academy/Marion on Friday.

The Class 9B No. 3 Jaguars rushed for 417 yards, held the ball for more than 34 minutes and picked up a 48-18 win over the Phoenix in high school football action.

The contest featured a contrast in offensive styles. The Jaguars (6-1) are a run-heavy team, while the Phoenix (5-2) look to air it out.

Corsica-Stickney, which received 200 rushing yards and four touchdowns from Waylon Bolle, carried the ball 59 times on offense to wear down the Phoenix. Defensively, the Jaguars forced two turnovers and held the Phoenix to 266 total yards.

“They are a big play offense,” Corsica-Stickney coach Gregg Olawsky said. “We tried to keep everything in front and we did a really good job up front putting the pressure on them without having to blitz a lot. So our front three guys did an awesome job and the back side played really well I thought for the most part tonight and got some turnovers and played really well.”

Corsica-Stickney’s defense limited Freeman/Freeman Academy/Marion’s dual-threat quarterback Riley Tschetter, who completed 15 of 28 passes for 235 yards and had two passing touchdowns. The freshman quarterback, however, was bottled up and faced constant pressure against Corsica-Stickney’s defensive front.

“We just knew we had to get a pass rush and cover the run,” said Corsica-Stickney senior lineman Lucas Krogstad, who had 7.5 tackles. “At about half we started wearing them down, I would say.”

Bolle scored a 20-yard touchdown run on Corsica-Stickney’s opening drive. Tate Tolsma added a one-yard touchdown run and Shad Bosma hit Brock Hinker for a one-yard touchdown reception for a 20-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Tschetter connected with Matt Hagen for a five-yard touchdown reception to get the Phoenix within 20-6. On its next possession, Freeman/Freeman Academy/Marion drove into Corsica-Stickney’s territory and could have put another dent into the lead.

However, Tolsma intercepted Tschetter as time expired in the red zone, preserving Corsica-Stickney’s 14-point lead before halftime. The Phoenix were receiving the ball after halftime, too.

“It was huge,” Olawsky said. “He kind of laid back and played defense in the back end. He got the pick and it turned out well.”

The teams traded touchdowns in a back-and-fourth third quarter. Bolle plowed in for a seven-yard touchdown run, while he also had a 46-yard touchdown romp in the quarter.

Freeman/Freeman Academy/Marion’s Dominic Sperling had a one-yard rushing touchdown, while Tschetter connected with Hagen for a 54-yard touchdown reception. Hagen scored after breaking a tackle, reserved his field and sprinted past Corsica-Stickney for the score.

Bolle and Tolsma added rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter for Corsica-Stickney, which also received 148 rushing yards from Carter Wright.

“Waylon is really fast but our line does a lot for us,” Olawsky said. “They got a good push and we played really physical I thought and really set the tone tonight.”

Tolsma finished with six tackles and two interceptions on defense. Wright added five tackles.

Sperling and Christopher Aasen both rushed for 20 yards for the Phoenix. Rocky Ammann hauled in six catches for 106 yards, while Hagen had three catches for 83 yards. Ethan Balvin recorded eight tackles, while Sawyer Wipf had seven tackles and an interception.

Up next, Corsica-Stickney plays at Sully Buttes in a top-five Class 9B matchup on Oct. 14 in Onida. The Phoenix will host Florence-Henry on Oct. 14.
