MITCHELL — The Class B No. 3 Lyman girls basketball team upset Class AA Mitchell, 60-52, at the Hoop City Classic, in a rare Class B vs. Class AA matchup.

Raider coach Cody Volmer said he jumped at the chance to play against the Class AA Kernels when given the opportunity. On Monday, the Raiders (3-0) proved they could play with and beat the Class AA foe.

“When they called and asked if we would take this game, I said I would,” Volmer said. “I didn’t know what Mitchell had, but I knew what we had and I was excited for what we had. So I guess when we had the opportunity I was going to take the opportunity.”

Lyman sophomore guard Jordyn Scott tossed in 27 points, hit five 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. Bree Smart added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Mak Scott added 11 points and four rebounds.

Jordyn Scott said the Raiders were looking forward to the Kernel challenge, and didn’t let the difference in classifications affect them.

“We were really looking forward to it,” Scott said. “We didn’t think about it too much that they were bigger than us and we just went out and played our game.”

The Raiders led from start-to-finish, built a 15-point lead late in the third quarter and withstood a late Kernel charge for the win.

“I think everyone played together and we haven’t really been able to play against a good team yet,” Jordyn Scott said. “So I think that really helped.”

The Raiders also assisted on 11 of their 21 made field goals, including Jordyn Scott, Mak Scott and Brooke Montgomery with three assists apiece.

“In practice we really worked on just moving the ball and not having one person be scoring,” Jordyn Scott said. “I think we really did that tonight.”

Mitchell’s Addie Siemsen finished with 25 points, six rebounds and three steals. CeCe Morgan added six points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Mitchell (1-3) will play Sisseton on Wednesday in the Hoop City Classic.

Lyman will play Corsica-Stickney on Jan. 3 at the Midwest Miracles Classic in Mitchell. Despite the signature win over Mitchell, Volmer said the Raiders will face a tough task against the Jaguars.

“We have to play a Corsica-Stickney team next week, who I think feels like they’re pretty good and we feel like they’re pretty good, too,” Volmer said. “So we are going to get about four days off and we’re going to have to go back and play another tough game.”
