On a cold and windy day last week Lyman’s Skyler Volmer jumped onto the Raiders school-record list. Volmer cleared 5-05 on April 21 breaking Renee Rabern’s 1990 record of (5-04.5).

Coach Tami McLanahan says there is way more in the tank.

“She moved the bar up to 5-06 and cleared it but the bar came off in a gust of wind,” McLanahan said. “I’m pretty pumped about that effort and getting it so early and on a cold day.”

With the cold and wet weather Volmer has focused mostly on the high-jump this April staying indoors to work on her craft. With that in mind, and with very little practice in the long jump and triple jump, Volmer went big in all three events at Onida.

The sophomore got out to 34-02.5 in the triple jump, a mark that is second best among Class B girls athletes.

The Lyman record in the triple jump, 34-06 by Tiffany Roderick in 2000.

Volmer finished 15th in the triple jump at the state track meet and looks now like she’ll be a contender at the Class B state meet in late May.

More interesting of all of Volmer’s efforts may have been her performance in the long jump. At the meet in Onida, Volmer reached 16-10.75, the top mark in Class B this season.

Not bad for an athlete who is trying this event for the first time.

“She did not do the long jump prior to this year,” McLanahan said. “With the weather it has been hard to get any work done outside. She’s just working and slowly coming along and of course you want to carry that into the state meet.”

McLanahan is the hurdles specialist at Lyman and said Volmer works very hard for that event as well.

“She likes the hurdles and probably spends more time there than she does in the high jump,” she said. “Cecil Johnson (long-time volunteer coach) helps Skyler with the high jump and her dad likes to come to practice sometimes.”

Her father, Cody Volmer, holds Lyman school records in the high jump and triple jump.

  • Triple jump, Cody Volmer, 42-04.25, (1996)

With 605 Sports’ release of the top-ten lists on Tuesday Volmer finds herself highly ranked in four events.

  • 100 meter hurdles, (:16.4), 4th

  • High jump (5-05), 1st

  • Long jump (16.10.75), 1st

  • Triple jump (34-02.5)
