DES MOINES, Iowa — Sioux Falls Washington thrower Kael Miedema launched the high school discus 193-feet at an AAU Region 14 Qualifier.

That throw is the third longest in South Dakota history, trailing only George Amundson’s (Aberdeen Central) state record of 211-4 and Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Jack Lembke (198-3) in 2014. Miedema won the discus and shot put (60-0.5) at the AAU meet.

As a result, Miedema qualified for the 2022 AAU Junior Olympic Games on July 30-Aug. 6 in Greensboro, North Carolina. In order to qualify for the event, an athlete needs to finish in the top six in a running event, top six in a field event, top six in a relay and four in a multi-event.

Several weeks ago at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon, Miedema won the shot put with a throw of 62 and 3.75 inches. That mark moved Miedema to No. 8 on the all-time boys shot put list in South Dakota.

Miedema will be a senior at Sioux Falls Washington this fall.
