Of all the records that could potentially be broken at this weekend’s Howard Wood Dakota Relays, the girls shot put and discus records should be on high alert. 

Hamlin’s Gracelyn Leiseth holds South Dakota state records in the shot put (52-6.75) and discus (171-8). The future University of Florida thrower already holds the Howard Wood Dakota Relays record in the shot put (48-11) set in 2022. She’ll be aiming to top the discus record of (167-0) that was set in 2019. 

Custer sprinter Jordyn Larsen has been doing some damage in the western part of the state. She has Class A’s fastest time in the 100-meter dash (:12.30) and the second fastest time in the 200-meter dash (:25.86). Her mom, Kathy Young, is an assistant coach at Custer and was an All-American cross-country runner at the University of South Dakota. 

The Class A high jump looks to be loaded with talent. Madison’s Audrey Nelson has the top jump (5-5) in Class A. Defending champion Ashlyn Koupal of Wagner (5-4), Jorja VanDenHul of Dakota Valley (5-4) and Ally Mullaney of Miller (5-4) all could win a state title later this spring. 

Keep an eye on the Sioux Falls Christian girls relay teams at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. The Chargers have top Class A times in all five relays and the girls have a legitimate shot at sweeping those relays in Sioux Falls this weekend.
