Class A track and field leaders - Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal, Madison’s Audrey Nelson soar to the top of high jump

One of the events to look forward to at the upcoming state track meet is the Class A girls high jump and a showdown between Madison’s Audrey Nelson and Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal 

Nelson won the Howard Wood Dakota Relays high jump title by clearing 5-6. Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal was second with a leap of (5-5). At Tuesday’s SESD meet in Parkston, Koupal cleared (5-6) and the pair tied for the best jumps in Class A. At the 2022 state track meet Koupal cleared (5-7) to win the event, Nelson was second with a leap of (5-6). 

Sioux Valley distance phenom Isabelle Bloker lowered her 1,600-meter run personal best to (5:02.62). She also has the top time in the 3,200 meter run. 

The Hamlin girls are going to score a lot of points in the throws at the state meet. All the headlines go to Gracelyn Leiseth, as they should, but Kami Wadsworth is having a heck of a senior year with throws of (43-3) and (134-3) in the shot put and discus, respectively. 

The West Central girls always seem to put together good sprint relays and 2023 is no exception. The Trojans have the fourth fastest 400-meter relay (:51.24) and the fastest 800-meter relay where the girls set a new Howard Wood Dakota Relays record with a time of (1:43.86). West Central’s Emma Goehring has the Class A lead in the long jump (17-7.5) while Molli Thornton has the Class A lead in the triple jump (36-1).
