SIOUX FALLS — The Colman-Egan girls are deep, superbly talented, ferocious at times and look to be in the driver’s seat for a third-consecutive Class B track and field title.

The Hawks have sprinters, 400-meter runners and several mid-distance athletes all with enough versatility to dominate most of the Class B relays.

Junior Daniela Lee has top times in the 100-meter dash (:12.28), 200-meter dash (:25.24). Senior Reese Luze has the second fastest 400-meter dash (:58.94) and the fastest 800-meter run (2:16.93). Senior Josie Mousel has the third fastest 200-meter dash but she will be a vital cog on the Hawks sprint relay teams.

The Hawks have the fastest times in the 400-meter relay, 800-meter relay and sprint medley relay. The girls trail only Deubrook Area in the 1,600-meter relay and 3,200-meter relay. Colman-Egan won’t score many points in the hurdles or field events but their core of runners should overmatch the rest of the field.

After Colman-Egan quality teams will battle for what’s left of the team hardware.

Deubrook Area senior Ellie Olsen is having a great senior campaign with the best 400-meter dash (:58.64), the seventh best 800-meter run time and anchors the Dolphins top-ranked 1,600 and 3,200 meter relays. Menno’s Ashton Messey could do a lot of team damage by herself. The junior has the best triple jump (35.4.5), the top 100-meter hurdle time (:15.34), and the top 300-meter hurdle time (:46.27).

Burke’s Piper Hanson has improved dramatically in both hurdling disciplines, having the

Other teams like Chester Area, Wall and Northwestern should also have good meets with several good individuals and relay efforts.

Meet records watch:

  • Colman-Egan’s Reese Luze has run 2:16.93 in the 800-meter run and is within reach of former Ipswich great Macy Heinz (2:15.17). The meet record is 5:04.51 by Summit’s Melinda Zirbel in 2003. Chester Area’s Emery Larson’s 3,200-meter run time of 11:14.05 may not catch Zirbel’s meet record of 11:02.24 set in 2003 until next year.

  • In the 3,200-meter relay, Colman-Egan and Deubrook Area are about seven seconds off the 1980 record from Kadoka.

  • Colman-Egan or Deubrook Area will likely challenge Castlewood’s sprint medley relay record of 4:17.35 from 2012.
