Ipswich boys, Chester Area girls move up team standing at state track meet
Ipswich's Trevor Heinz picked up valuable team points for the Tigers with a second place finish in the long jump.

The Class B boys track and field team champion is still anybody’s guess but the Ipswich Tigers made a move Friday behind long jumper Trevor Heinz.

Heinz finished second in the Class B long jump (21-11.75) and moved up to second place in the team standings, one point behind day one leader Menno. Sophomore Maxwell Kulesa contributed two points for the Tigers with a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter run. 

The Wolves still lead the boys team race with 32 points, ahead of Ipswich (31) and Wolsey-Wessington 25). Wall (20) along with Kadoka Area (19) and Canistota (19) round out the top-five. 

In girls action the Chester Area team ran past the Ipswich girls behind freshman Emery Larson’s state championship in the 3,200-meter run (11:15.27). Larson also anchored Chester Area’s sprint medley relay team to a second-place finish on Thursday night. 

The Flyers have 27 points, ahead of Ipswich (24.5) and Deubrook Area (22). Northwestern

(21) and Colman-Egan (20) round out the top-five. 

 Friday’s boys highlights: 

  • 3,200 meter run: Canistota senior Josiah Schroeder ran a smart and controlled effort to win the 3,200 meter run (9:59.15). The senior finished ahead of Freeman Academy’s Tavin Schroeder (10:02.58) and Colome’s Joseph Laprath (10:06.47). 

  • Wolsey-Wessington freshman Caleb Richmond won the Class B 800-meter run (2:01.88)

  • The Faulkton Area boys were the top qualifier in the boys 800-meter relay.

  • Chester Area’s Jovi Wolf was the top qualifier in the 200-meter dash (:22.90) and 400-meter dash (:49.25). 

  • Wall’s Rylan McDonnell won the long jump in a South Dakota best of (22-8.25). He also won the triple jump on Thursday. 

Friday’s girls highlights: 

  • Chester Area freshman Emery Larson won the 3,200 meter run (11:15.27), about 13 seconds off the meet record. 

  • Colman-Egan senior Reese Luze won the 800-meter run (2:15.63).

  • Avon’s Courtney Sees won the long jump (17-0.50). 

  • Burke’s Paige Bull won the Class B discus (123-2). 

  • Duebrook Area’s Ellie Olsen was the top qualifier in the 400-meter dash (:58.69).
