SIOUX FALLS — Lane Krautschun continued a school tradition on Friday.

The Bison sophomore captured the Class B boys 3,200-meter run at the South Dakota track and field meet at Howard Wood Stadium.

Krautschun joins a recent run of successful Cardinal runners, including last year’s 3,200-meter winner Jonathan Burkhalter and multiple-time state champion distance ace Daniel Burkhalter.

Krautschun kept the trend going with Friday’s 3,200-meter run, clocking in at nine minutes and :57.18 seconds.

“It’s awesome to keep it going,” Krautschun said. “It’s really cool to see what those guys did and try to emulate it.”

For Krautschun, it capped off an injury-riddled sophomore campaign, which he battled with sciatic nerve pains in his quads.

So that made Friday’s state title run all the more special.

“It’s such a relief,” Krautschun said. “I was super, super worried coming in. I was injured all of August. So I am so relieved. I'm so happy. It's awesome.”

On Friday, Krautschun’s plan was “just to settle in the first mile and not do anything crazy and then try to hit in five and six (laps).”

Krautschun was in the middle of the pack before moving past the field and won by four seconds over second-place Josiah Schroeder of Canistota (10:01.33)

“Garrett Winkler from Newell kind of took the lead and I just went with him and we came around that corner,” Krautschun said about making his move. “I am like ‘I am not sure if I should go now.’ But I just felt good. So I went with it and came out on top.”
