Sioux Falls Christian teams go big on Friday to extend team leads at state track meet

SIOUX FALLS — Leaders after day one of the Class A state track meet the Sioux Falls Christian boys and girls added to their lead Friday. 

Early Friday morning junior Corrine Braun broke the school record in the 3,200 meter run, finishing second with a time of 10:53.41. Sioux Falls Christian picked up an additional 13 points Friday with second and fourth place finishes in the 800-meter run from Anna Vyn and Ellie Maddox. 

The Sioux Falls Christian girls have 51.5 points, ahead of Dakota Valley (30) and Lennox (24). Custer 24 and Sioux Valley 19 round out the top-five heading into Saturday’s finals. 

The Sioux Falls Christian boys picked up 18 points in the boys 800-meter run with a first place finish from Isaac Davelaar (1:51.11) and a second place finish from Davis Buck (1:55.04). 

The Charger boys have 54 points, ahead of Belle Fourche (21),  Deuel (15) and HIll City (15). Lennox (14.5) rounds out the top-five. 

Friday’s girls highlights: 

  • Sioux Valley’s Isabelle Bloker won the 3,200-meter run Friday morning with a time of (10:50.65). She, Corrine Braun of Sioux Falls Christian and Flandrau’s Faith Weise all ran under the previous meet record of Heidi Reed from Canton in 1991. 

  • Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Berkeley Engelland ran one of the fastest 400-meter dashes in South Dakota history (:54.96) in Friday’s preliminaries. Engelland also won the 800-meter run (2:13.51) and was the fastest qualifier in the 200-meter dash. 

  • Hamlin’s Gracelyn Leiseth broke the Class A meet record in the discus (169-11).

  • Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal won a third-consecutive Class A high jump title with a leap of 5-6.


Friday’s boys highlights: 

  • 3,200 meter run: Belle Fourche’s Sawyer Clarkson won the 3,200 meter run (9:17.27) breaking his own meet record. 

  • 800-meter run: Isaac Davelaar won the 800-meter run (1:51.11). Friday’s event was probably the best field of Class A 800-meter runners ever assembled as eight runners ran under 1:59. 

  • Aberdeen Roncalli’s Jayden Munroe won  the triple jump (45-1.5).

  • Rapid City Christian’s Chase Maher won the pole vault (15-7). That effort broke the meet record and was the top vault in South Dakota this spring.
